Julia the American African

Due to such a high demand, I have created a blog to document my journey in Lagos, Nigeria. This adventure is during the time that I am working as the Seconday Art Teacher for the American International School of Lagos for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years.

Julia the American African: November 2007

http://juliagrazzini.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 28, 2007. The kids in the class are from all different cultures and nations. We have equal guys and girls and a variety of social skills. Tommy, on the other hand, is a good-looking African male who is popular and talented. As I was about to start reprimanding Tommy for a second time, he turns to Krishana and pokes him in his stomach. The whole room stopped. Everyone turned and watched as Krishana looked down to his pristine white apron with one solitary red dot in the middle. With th...

Julia the American African: October 2007

http://juliagrazzini.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 16, 2007. Well, there isn't much gossip. Because of my recent kidney, bladder, skin and sinus infection debacle.I have been keeping a pretty low profile. Those of you privy to my intense discomfort and often embarassing symptoms will be pleased to hear that i am well on my way to recovery and the medical supplies here are adequate for my needs. Nothing. You're welcome is only reserved for white people and only as a small talk phrase. So every time I arrive anywhere, I am told tha...You c...

Julia the American African: Ten days....ten ports.....

http://juliagrazzini.blogspot.com/2008/03/ten-daysten-ports.html

Monday, March 31, 2008. Ten days.ten ports. What an amazing and beautiful vacation! I loved it and feel incredibly blessed to have been able to see so much in such a tight little package. Honestly, though.I probably would have gotten bored if I had gone any slower. I have included a ton of pictures of most of each of the places I went to. No worries, this is about 1/1000 of how many pictures we actually took but it is a little slice of each port and the type of atmosphere we were in. The other visual mas...

Julia the American African: August 2007

http://juliagrazzini.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 28, 2007. So my classroom is a ghetto pile. In fact, I even refer to it as The Tower (as in the Tower of London). In fact, all day today had an overwhelming stench of bug spray because I complained of the 3.5 inch cockroaches.while the kids complained at first.strangely after about fifteen minutes they were all giggles. Sunday, August 26, 2007. Well, they are the fabulous expats that I have adopted as my own. Expats, in case you are unfamiliar with the term, are expatriates; people who li...

She’s Arrived! | Hangul and Seoul

https://dowlerseoul.wordpress.com/2009/03/21/shes-arrived

Our adventures living abroad in Seoul, South Korea. March 21, 2009 in Uncategorized. Time to dust off the old blog and break out the birthday party hats. We have a new baby girl! She was born last week and weighed in at over 9 lbs. Despite being much heavier than our first, Maya, who was around 7 3/4 lbs, labor went much quicker and easier for Marquita–must have been the experience and conditioning gained from the first time. Anyway, we are grateful. Without further adieu, the baby of our affection:.

Our adventures living abroad in Seoul, South Korea. Here we go…my parents’ trip to Seoul. May 18, 2009 in Family. The highlights of their trip were spending a couple of days on Jeju Island (the small island off the southern tip of South Korea), a tour of the DMZ, shopping in Namdaemun and Insadong, seeing some palaces in Seoul, my parents were able to visit the memorial sight of the Christian martyrs who were all beheaded near the Han river, and of course just spending time together. Another of our blogs.

Our adventures living abroad in Seoul, South Korea. Why go to the museum? August 26, 2008 in Uncategorized. Today Maya went on a field trip with her preschool to the National Museum of Korea. When she came home from school (Daniel went and got her) I asked her what she did at the museum. She promptly told me that “the museum is broken! Now, why in the world would you want to go to the museum to see a whole bunch of broken stuff? August 26, 2008 in Uncategorized. Let’s see… we are getting read...8221; And...

She works hard for the money | Hangul and Seoul

Our adventures living abroad in Seoul, South Korea. She works hard for the money. September 10, 2008 in Uncategorized. I don’t know if I have ever mentioned this before, but Maya could literally survive as a street urchin here in Seoul. Whenever we go out sightseeing or even to the store somebody gives her something. Some days she lucks out and gets cookies and other days she’s not so lucky and some old grandma or grandpa gives her red ginseng candy. I don’t believe this girl. Another of our blogs. Septe...

For those not in on the 411, amazing Emily was one of my students eons ago in Mesquite Nevada. Thursday, January 8, 2009. The class wasnt nearly as painful, or as fun, as I had hoped but I got through it. I then subbed again later in the day but there was no lesson plan. So what does Ms. G do in a situation like this? You guessed it, I taught them Mormon drinking games. Oh the high jinx!
