The First Tuesday Women's Book Club: September 2012
http://ocwbg.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
September 6, 2012. Tillie Olsen: Tell Me a Riddle. Has won an amazing number of awards and held some very prestigious positions. This collection of loosely related short stories (4 in total) were all written in the 50s, and appear in the book in the order that they were written. I think writers like Jean Stafford or Daphne DuMaurier are better short story writers. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The First Tuesday Women's Book Club: May 2013
http://ocwbg.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
May 20, 2013. The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye. This is a murder mystery, and the murders are quite gruesome. But Faye uses another historical fact the existence of "flash talk" to lighten up the story. I didn't know anything about this way of speaking, and her use of it was fantastic and often very funny. The excerpts from Matsell's lexicon in the front were helpful and fascinating. Links to this post. May 14, 2013. That Woman - The Life of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor by Anne Sebba. The First Tuesday Women's Book Club: The Attack by Yasmina Khadra, now a movie
http://ocwbg.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-attack-by-yasmina-khadra-now-movie.html
July 14, 2013. The Attack by Yasmina Khadra, now a movie. We read Khadra's book a few years ago in the book group and all of us liked it and it was a good discussion book. I see a movie based on the novel has been released in some theaters. It seems to be getting good reviews. Below are a couple articles about the movie and book:. A Politically Charged Mystery. The Effort to Stop The Attack. Deftly explores emotions after suicide bombing. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 2013 Author Websites or Bios.

April 4, 2012. The Eighty Dollar Champion. The Eighty-Dollar Champion: Snowman, the Horse That Inspired a Nation. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. This was a great book. The author knows horses and was careful to explain things in terms that non-riders would understand. Her passion for her subject came through clearly. I had never heard of Snowman or Harry de Leyer but I'm glad I saw a review of this book and was able to get a copy from my local library. Links to this post. Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden. If yo...

The First Tuesday Women's Book Club: The Return of Captain John Emmett by Elizabeth Speller
http://ocwbg.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-return-of-captain-john-emmett-by.html
August 9, 2013. The Return of Captain John Emmett by Elizabeth Speller. The Return of Captain John Emmett. There were a lot of very British terms or slang sprinkled throughout the book, but I enjoy books that force me to look up terms or vocabulary - I always learn something new that way. Some examples are a "British Warm" (a type of coat), subaltern (didn't know what that rank was), and many more. I would recommend this if you like period fiction and mysteries. The First Tuesday Women's Book Club: Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin
http://ocwbg.blogspot.com/2013/07/alice-i-have-been-by-melanie-benjamin.html
July 8, 2013. Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin. After reading The Autobiography of Mrs Tom Thumb. I decided I'd try Melanie Benjamin's earlier historical fiction, A lice I Have Been. This book, about Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) and Alice Liddell (the inspiration for the book Alice in Wonderland. Flowed better than Mrs Tom Thumb. I've never read a biography of Dodgson, so I know nothing about him. The slant that Benjamin seemed to take in Alice I Have Been. Liddell's romance with Prince Leopo...

August 5, 2013. Top 100 Thrillers - Audience Picks. I came across this. Article on NPR today. I thought it was interesting because people's definitions of "thriller" are so different. I have read 24 out of the 100, and there are probably 5-10 more that are on my "to read" list. What about you? If you want a place to start, the best one on the list, read or not, in my opinion is The Charm School. By DeMille. Outstanding. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
