Copious amounts of Diet Dr. Pepper help nicely with that last one, though.). There are many many things to get re-used to as I re-acclimate to my home, and get prepared for in San Antonio. But it feels nice to be home, and I'm thankful that I made it home sin novedades, or without troubles. Thanks again for praying for me, supporting me, and following me through this year. Juli in Guatemala!: July 2011

http://www.julierinsmith.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

168;Hoy en ocho¨ is a very common Guatemalan phrase that means litterally ¨today in 8,¨ aka a week from today. On Wednesday morning, my host dad said this to me at the breakfast table-. 168;Hoy en 8, usted [yes, 6 months later and I am still addressed using formal usted - I am very important, afterall] va a despertar en su propia cama¨ Or, ¨A week from today, you´ll wake up in your own bed.¨. Thanks for your prayers and support, world. See you in less than ocho (primero Dios). Posted by Juli's Journey.

My parents and sister came to visit! We rode in tuk tuk,. Walked (and had to get our shoes shined),. Road in a pickup truck,. In lanchas (boats),. And in camionetas (school buses). What an adventure we had! For more, see my picasa album of the amazing alfombras and processions we saw for Holy week and Easter, and the trips we had to Lake Atitlan and Xela! 1 Month in Guatemala! Well world, I´ve officially been in Guatemala for 1 month! In some ways it feels like I´ve been here forever, in others, like I just got here. In any event, I´m loving it. Here´s some stuff I´m still getting used to. 2 No hot water. Well, except in the shower. Getting used to washing my face with cold water. 5 Scented toilet paper. Who invented this? But it´s been an adjustment having NO idea what any given meal will bring. There have also been a few noteworthy fails. F...Instead, w...

Juli in Guatemala!: June 2011

http://www.julierinsmith.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Last weekend, we took advantage of a sunny morning to go 1.5 hours away to the Volcàn Pacaya to have a little hike. It`s been on my Guatemala Bucket List to hike a volcano, and I finally got to do it- It was amazing! On the way up, we passed through lush greenery and saw amazing views of surroudning volcanoes, farmland, small towns, and God`s amazing creation. It was a bit steep, but such amazing views! Once we got to the top, it seriously seemed like we were on the moon! What a cool experience! I'll be ...

Juli in Guatemala!: February 2011

http://www.julierinsmith.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

We're back from YAV retreat/ visa renewal in Tikal and Belize! It was an amazing trip, and such a blessing to be able to recharge and relax for a week. A huge thanks to my supporters for making it possible! So I'll start with the full report on Tikal. It's unknown why the town was abandoned, but I'm guessing that people got tired of climbing so many stairs in their huge headdresses. Or the jaguars ate them. Posted by Juli's Journey. Well friends, I've made it half way through my YAV year in Guatemala!

Going where they lead. What Ill be doing in Guatemala. Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Some things require two tries… but they’re definitely worth it! Before Christmas, I shared my excitement over learning how to play in Xela. I love it! A part of my playing turned into volcano climbing. There’s a 3500 meter volcano that you can see from outside my window of my room. It haunts me, calls to me, and dares me to go visit it. So, I finally did. Twice. Quiet morning from the volcano. Carlos and I on the descent.

Thursday, August 26, 2010. Sorry for the delay. This address can be used to send "non-valuable and non-urgent" items. If you send a box it will stop in Guatemala City, be taxed, and wait and wait and wait for me to come and pick it up. :) But the puffy manila envelopes should make it through. You can expect it to take 10 days (usually) to 3 weeks (occasionally). In other words, the postal system runs on "Guatemalan time". The Gift of The Cloud. But with the exception of today, it's been unusually cloudy.

Thursday, June 30, 2011. I've been learning Spanish for a loooooong time, and man, would Ms. Nobles be proud to see where I've gotten after those first few, rocky years. And still, every once in a while, a word or saying grabs me by the heart or makes my ears perk up in curiosity. So, I thought I would share a few of my favorites. This is just my favorite Spanish word. It means bubbles, and it's fun to say. Burbujas. This is an oldie, but goodie. Me encanta chocolate. Me encanta la playa. Basically just ...

Going where they lead. What Ill be doing in Guatemala. Sunday, January 6, 2013. Just this week, in a conversation with a friend, I espoused my theory that 95% of this world's issues are based upon poor, or a complete lack of, communication. If you are not communicating your needs with one another, there can never be a compromise that helps everyone succeed at this thing we are all in together - life. Our habits and desires should never, ever, come above the needs for basic survival for hundreds of thousa...
