Bayeux

On the road again. Jean, Judy and Laurie. Sometimes half the fun of going somewhere is getting there, and that’s how it was on this trip. The bus stopped every two hours, and often we’d stop at a little town, shop at the local market and have a picnic lunch at some scenic spot. Almost always the towns would have a statue of Joan of Arc or a rooster (national symbol of France—cock-a-rico! A farmer’s market and a wonderful pâtisserie to pick up baguettes and pastries. Filet mignon—pork, of course!

Normandy

One of the reasons I was drawn to this tour is that it included Normandy. For years, every time I saw pictures or stories about the American Cemetery, I thought it would be wonderful to see it. I never thought I could, but now this dream has come true for me! It was an incredible experience visiting the beaches in Normandy and ending the tour at the cemetery. Sainte Mère Eglise. On D-Day, it was the job of the paratroophers to land behind enemy lines in support of the American landing at Utah Beach.

One of the most picturesque French towns we visited was Fougères in Brittany. We had free time for lunch (crepes were a specialty, which drew no complaints from any of us), and we had plenty of time to explore on our own. Another gem we found along the way.
