This post is also available in: 영어. 중국 정부는 난민에 대한 두 개의 국제 협약에 서명하였음에도 불구하고( 1951년의 난민 현황과 관련된 협약. 을 참조), 중국은 북한 난민을 경제적 이민자로 분류하고 발견되는데로 본국으로 송환한다. 탈북자들은 중국에서 법적으로 보호 받지 못하며 범죄에 노출되어 있다. 탈북자가 잡히면 북한으로 보내져 고문을 받고 툭옥된다. 중국으로 도망간 여자들은 쉽게 성매매의 대상이 되어 중국인이나 조선족에게 팔린다. 이런 결혼에서 태어난 아이들 중 일부는 어머니가 송환되거나 아버지가 아이를 돌볼 수 없는 경우 고아가 된다. 아이의 대부분은 사실상 무국적자이다.
