Petty Observations: April 2013
http://pettyobservations.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Musings, observations, and updates. Thursday, April 18, 2013. What I Cannot Say. I know this: I will no longer say that poor racing was the equivalent of "blowing up." I will not coach my cross country and track runners to "explode" as they approach the finish line. I know this because I know that language, like the reality it signifies, can maim and disfigure. So I write what I cannot say. And by the end, I wondered how it would be possible to return to California without maintaining intermittent contac...

Petty Observations: A Slippery Slope.
http://pettyobservations.blogspot.com/2014/07/a-slippery-slope.html
Musings, observations, and updates. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. In training for a trail 50k, I felt a degree of reluctance in considering myself an ultrarunner because I hadn't completed a race longer than a marathon. Just signing up merely landed me on the fringe of the population, so even on the night before the race- even as I idled in the parking lot of the Mt. Ashland Ski Resort- I felt a weird nervousness and had no one with which to share it. That's an easy Thursday morning before work. Average mile...

Get me outta here! All you need is love. 8230;love is all you need…. It’s soup week, folks. January 22, 2012. I love soup. I have an borderline unhealthy obsession with soup. I live on a primarily soup diet throughout the fall and winter months. And sometimes in summer. And spring. Yesterday I had 5 different kinds of soup. In one day. Here’s another Soup Week. Artistic soup photos courtesy of my hubby, of course. Rustic Italian Tortellini Soup. 1 medium onion, chopped. 6 garlic cloves, minced. 1) Crumbl...

Petty Observations: A Late Showing for an Early Show

Musings, observations, and updates. Wednesday, August 13, 2014. A Late Showing for an Early Show. Another doctor arrived and prepared Mom for the manual breaking of the water. As he approached the bed, the water broke naturally (! Mom had her most intense contraction, and then immediately vomited in an emergency puke bag. And then things got moving in a hurry. Petty Observations: June 2012
http://pettyobservations.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Musings, observations, and updates. Monday, June 11, 2012. The conclusion of the academic year felt, strangely, absolutely necessary and incredibly impossible at the same time. It had a quality of simultaneity; I felt it had both just started and yet needed to end.). The withdrawal from one habit leads, ultimately, into the investment in others. As a result, I've been reconstructed certain aspects of myself as a way to focus and refine things I learned in my brief hiatus from my personal playbook. I've b...

Petty Observations: August 2012
http://pettyobservations.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Musings, observations, and updates. Saturday, August 18, 2012. How to End a Summer Vacation. My summer began the way all things begin: from the end of something else. Ironically, it did not start on the close of the school year, the evaporation of spring, or the heretofore description of my deteriorating health as it related to running. No, my summer commenced only after I abandoned a fruitless and impulsive meandering through non-teaching careers. I read. I ran. I harvested vegetables from the g...I ret...
