Opening Scientific Notation + Laws of Exponents Unit | just mathness
https://justmathness.wordpress.com/2014/09/09/opening-scientific-notation-laws-of-exponents-unit
A blog about middle school math. Opening Scientific Notation Laws of Exponents Unit. In about a week or so, we’ll start our first official “8th Grade” unit. We use the EngageNY. And our units (or “modules,” as they are called) are based on the Common Core. And then, the other night, I was lying awake in bed thinking about this, and I was like – teach them binary! And then maybe look again at basic place value stuff. And then connect it to scientific notation/Laws of Exponents. And tagged base 10. Notify ...
Building Student Motivation – Using Reflections | just mathness
https://justmathness.wordpress.com/2014/09/30/building-student-motivation-using-reflections
A blog about middle school math. Building Student Motivation – Using Reflections. I read somewhere that having students write down one or two things they remember about a lesson helps “make it sticky.” I think this is probably from a book I haven’t read yet, but have heard spoken about, called Make It Stick: the Science of Successful Learning. They’re half pages, and I just keep a stack lying around. I’ve been into icons this year. So far, there’s only been positives to this endeavor:. September 30, 2014.
Using Estimation 180 | just mathness
https://justmathness.wordpress.com/2014/09/07/using-estimation-180
A blog about middle school math. Last year, my co-teacher and I used Estimation 180. As our daily warm-up for class. We then expanded it into a project where students made their own series of estimation slides (this was inspired by suggestions from a Twitter exchange) and then students ran the warm-up procedure with their own slides. Below, I’m breaking down how each part went, and what we hope to change and add in this year. DAILY ESTIMATION 180 WARM UP PROCEDURE. 6 I reveal the answer to various respon...

Week 1 in Reveiw | just mathness
https://justmathness.wordpress.com/2014/09/14/week-1-in-reveiw
A blog about middle school math. Week 1 in Reveiw. So far, this has been the best first week of teaching! At the end of each class, I have students write:. 2 things that they learned. 1 question they have (optional right now). 1 piece of feedback (something they thought about the lesson – positive or negative). The response to the lesson that introduced the Socratic-type discussion (I did the questioning sequence I wrote about to introduce base 2 and reinforce base 10) was great! September 14, 2014.

Three J's Learning: a physical feeling for densities
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-physical-feeling-for-densities.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. A physical feeling for densities. Thanks to Mom, our stair number line recently got a (partial) refresh with some snazzy new number posters. This stimulated a new exploration by J1 to study how dense different groups of numbers are. Well, that wasn't how he phrased it . . . J1's dialogue as he played on the stairs:. Hmm, what if I walk up the multiples of 2? Walks up skipping stairs, no problem here. Oh, that's pretty easy, but J3 might find it tricky. 1, 4, what's next ? 16, oh no!

Three J's Learning: Equal? Ambiguous test questions
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/08/equal-ambiguous-test-questions.html
Sunday, August 9, 2015. We have been looking at questions from a local exam contest. I thought two were worth discussing. Kaew had been in the mountains climbing for the last four days and recorded her distances on this graph (the first one below). The other graph shows the climbing distances from Ploy. Below the graphs are 4 statements by other people and we're asked how many of the statements are true. The statements are:. Weera claims: "Each day, Kaew climbed more than Ploy.". The math class answer.
