London, March 18XX: lettergames

London, March 18XX. Both of your letters arrived on the same day, which was a great comfort to me. I am relieved to know that you do not, in fact, blame me for the faults of my father. But if I may offer a suggestion, when you next encounter the enemy at sea, instead of throwing a pitched battle, simply write them a letter, I assure you it will be quite effective. And of course we write to one another as I do with Aunt Emmaline. I do not think you need worry about Rachel’s prospects, or little Freddy’s&#...

London, April 1806. I shall begin by defending myself from the accusations in your last letter. If you remember, you were the one to first compare yourself to a Society Mama, I shall not take the blame for it, I shall only take the greatest satisfaction in allaying myself of it. Furthermore, you cannot be so indignant about it if you are going to end your letter 'is there anyone who has captured your fancy yet? You must pick a side, dearest, you cannot have both. The most exciting thing that has happened...

London, March 1806. Dear Cousin Théophile,. I am glad to finally make your acquaintance. It seems strange to know that I have had a first cousin that I was completely unaware of. It is past time we rectify that situation. I have heard a great deal about you already from Joshua, but I would rather hear from you yourself. But he started it. I’m afraid I have little more to tell you. I’m sure it cannot be of any interest to you whether or not I danced at Almack’s or spent an interminable evening playing...

Helene's Journal March, 1806: lettergames

Helene's Journal March, 1806. I danced with Colonel Lord Ford again. He was everything amiable and polite and looked very fit in his red coat. But as usual, any conversation seemed to die when we ran out of vacant pleasantries. None of my attempts to draw him out have succeeded, but he cannot object to me, or else why does he keep asking for a dance? You are not living up to your reputation, I said in lieu of anything intelligent. But I did succeed in surprising him, if only a little. My reputation?

London, March 1806. Your mother I’m sure would have supplanted the Emperor and conquered Russia by now. I am glad that you survived your adventure in the Musée with nothing more than a headache. I am doubly relieved that Chevalier de Brissac seems to be trustworthy. May I please remind you that Théophile’s father, who was involved in the same affair, has gone missing? Those are very unusual earrings, Miss Endicott, he said. From Captain Lord Rooke, I suppose? I hadn’t, he replied. Nor have I overlook...

London, March 18XX. I apologize for the tardiness of my reply. Indeed I did not want to write this letter at all. Part of me hoped that events would prove that I would not have to, but that is not fair to you, as you must be waiting and wondering. I know I promised you all my help while you were in France, and I will still honor that promise to the best of my ability. But I fear that the help I may be able to offer has been severly limited by recent events. But he is my father and I must obey him in this.

London, March 18XX. Thank you so much for your note, without it I might not have noticed your absence for my Season has been such a whirlwind of activity and delight that I had really quite forgotten you. Really cousin, I’m surprised at you. Did you think me such a bluestocking as to be incapable of enjoying a waltz? While I am not quite the belle of the ball, my dance card remains quite full, and Papa despairs of reclaiming the front foyer as it is choked with flowers of great variety. If you do not con...

London, March 18XX. Now, that bit of business out of the way, I shall attack your letter as it was written. My dear cousin, in your last letter you wrote to me of your father’s indiscretion. Something which, even though I am of age to be married, as a proper young lady I am not supposed to understand how it came about. After all, don’t your brothers all come from the cabbage patch? Théophile sounds like a little dear. A hellion perhaps, but aren’t all Sutcourts? No, of course you do. I was a fourth at wh...
