Travels of a mongoose. currently reporting from D'Kar, Botswana. Sunday, August 26, 2007. Independence Day (and other happenings). Being as I am too disorganized to set aside time to write in this blog, I am going to do some (not so) short, random notes on things that have happened in the last couple of weeks. 1 Independence Day, Aug. 15th. We had the day off (hurrah! Oh, those feisty middle-school girls. Warming the hearts of administrators the world over. However, the Raj seems to be alive and well!

Travels of a mongoose. currently reporting from D'Kar, Botswana. Friday, April 14, 2006. Mombasa. We made it. In fact, we've been here for a week. Here is a jumble of words, un-proof-read:. Hot, humid, tropical. Exploding, luxuriant, rampant, outrageous growth. A thousand shades of petals, a thousand sweet/spicy/strange tropical smells,. From maidenly frangipani in our pool. To elusive spices in the rainforest,. And all the thick mingled fragrances tangled in the humid air, unidentifiable. Going to Shimb...

Travels of a mongoose. currently reporting from D'Kar, Botswana. Thursday, July 20, 2006. One Long Game Drive. We're out before all the little tourist safari minibuses, and we chuckle to ourselves about how thrilled they would be to see the animals we see. Later in the day, any lions are immediately surrounded by two, three, four, or more minibuses, wageni (tourists) spilling out the top with their telephoto lenses. Tell me how you're all doing,. Posted by Jenn at 5:35 PM. Monday, July 03, 2006. I have r...

Travels of a mongoose. currently reporting from D'Kar, Botswana. Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Settling in and Preparing for the Classroom. Orientation of new staff began on Monday, July 9. At the time, it seemed like an unfair endurance test for those of us that had just arrived in. Little did I know, that in comparison to my teaching responsibilities, those all-day workshops would seem like absolute fluff. I think it’s fair to say that the school itself has brought me the most surprises of any part of. The r...

Travels of a mongoose. currently reporting from D'Kar, Botswana. Monday, June 18, 2007. Ah, firing up the old blog again. I'm keeping KenyaJenn because (a) I like it, and (b) it was Kenya that really started me on my independent travels, so it seems fitting that the blog keeps that moniker. This time I'm off to India - leaving July 4th, there for an entire year. I'll be teaching art at the Kodaikanal International School. Further news: graduated from Princeton! If anyone knows anything about. I'll only b...

Travels of a mongoose. currently reporting from D'Kar, Botswana. Sunday, September 09, 2007. Grade Six, and ONE GIANT WATERFALL. After a long absence. I’m finished teaching in the middle school and have gone back to my beloved elementary school. The kids are lovely, and they’re doing relatively well with their projects; however, I still don’t know if I’m actually teaching them anything, and they are constantly finding new ways to frustrate me. The grade six class is split in two 6A and 6B. 6B’s dominant ...

Travels of a mongoose. currently reporting from D'Kar, Botswana. Thursday, February 23, 2006. Baboon cliffs, on Mpala land. We saw many, many baboons - they are startlingly human, both in their movements, social behaviour, and voices. When they bicker in the trees across the river at the campsite, they sound disturbingly like people in distress. We saw some babies, with thin, short black hair and pink faces, much cuter than the ruffed, fierce-looking baboon adults. Greg emerging from a Masai house. Funny...
