Wednesday, June 8, 2011. It’s a gray, muggy day for the Ultimate Buzz’s annual Red Versus White Game, held on Davis fields, where the Buzz split themselves up and play Ultimate Frisbee against each other. The game is set for 3:30 in the afternoon but as 3:30 passes, the Buzz players are still spread across the field tossing around frisbees. 8220;We’re starting late in regular Buzz fashion,” says Sam Brennan, a Senior Captain of the Buzz. There are seven players on the field from each team. Players call t...

KG's Blog: April 2011

http://www.kgnarrative.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Nick Kristof's articles cover a lot of topics and he has a handle on all of them. I really enjoyed his articles that deal with human rights, especially "What About American Girls Sold on the Streets? And "'Three Cups of Tea,' Spilled." I felt that these two pieces are really different but also very similar. "What About American Girls Sold on the Streets? What About American Girls Sold on the Streets? Thursday, April 21, 2011. KG's Blog: The Events of October

http://www.kgnarrative.blogspot.com/2011/05/events-of-october.html

Wednesday, May 11, 2011. The Events of October. I was particularly interested in how she put together the chapter "This Endless Night." So much is happening in DeWaters on the eighteenth of October, so many characters: Maggie, Neenuf, the residents, her friends, the RA, the security guard, Kalamazoo Police, Jimmy Jones, Pat Ponto, the list goes on and on. How did she put it all together? I have no idea, I was just curious about it.) The back and forth shown in these messages is really important to th...

KG's Blog: Irving's Market: Built for Community

http://www.kgnarrative.blogspot.com/2011/05/irvings-market-built-for-community.html

Thursday, May 19, 2011. Irving's Market: Built for Community. The Kalamazoo Mall is home to many vibrant local restaurants and businesses, each one unique in its own way. While it is possible to find a less original Quiznos or Jimmy John’s by straying off the mall, if you look a little harder you will not have to surrender yourself to the same sandwich you can find just about anywhere. Tucked away in the Kalamazoo City Centre lives Irving’s Market, a local market and deli. But the plan fell through.

Jordan's Bitten Tongue: Profile Piece

PG Tips: 2011-05-22

http://patgailey.blogspot.com/2011_05_22_archive.html

Thursday, May 26, 2011. I found Aupperlee's articles inspiring like many of you. As Jon so eloquently pointed out, Aaron seems to have a good hold on the craft of his stories. Clearly he has interviewing and writing down to a science and these articles are well put together. But as all of you, my classmates, have focused on the positives of these articles I'm going to try and raise some problematics. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Narrative Journalism in the 'Zoo. Friday, April 22, 2011. A Trip Across the Border: round 2. Here is my second attempt at our personal essay. I'm hoping I did a better job of showing rather than telling, let me know what you think. You can find my outline and desired publication under the comments section. In 9th grade I ventured over the river without my family for the first time. On a scorching-hot day my friend Tomas and I scurried over the 'puente-libre' and where Santa Fe avenue met Juarez avenue we ducked into the dim-lit Kentu...

Exploring the Ordinary: Writing Response, Week Seven

http://ejnarrativejournalism.blogspot.com/2011/05/writing-response-week-seven.html

Diving headfirst into Narrative Journalism since March 2011. Thursday, May 12, 2011. Writing Response, Week Seven. Reading Gail Griffin's The Events of October. Driving to sources might seem preferable for talk of such a personal subject, but would mean much effort on the part of the interviewer. That said, how did Gail manage to tactfully tease out the stories of all these people? May 13, 2011 at 7:09 PM. This is what I had prepared but then the website went down. Also, I didn’t even think about w...

Wednesday, May 4, 2011. Casas por Cristo Survives. Going out for a Sunday drive is a way of life in El Paso. The powerful spring winds which, fuel dust storms that can block out the sun for much of April, can also push out pollution and provide for perfectly clear days. Throughout April 2011 Sunday drivers flocking to Scenic Dr. shared their destination with church groups praying with a purpose. Their purpose was an end to the violence in Juarez. While many are praying for the safety and well being of Ju...

Thursday, April 28, 2011. Another tactic of Kristof's that I appreciated was used in "What About American Girls Sold on the Street? One trait I noticed about his pieces is that they're all pretty easy reads. I don't mean this in a negative way, but they could be read pretty quickly and there were very few lulls where I felt like setting my computer down or moving on to a new article. PG Tips: Despite Roadblocks Change is Status Quo for Inspired Seniors

http://patgailey.blogspot.com/2011/06/despite-roadblocks-change-is-status-quo.html

Thursday, June 2, 2011. Despite Roadblocks Change is Status Quo for Inspired Seniors. Last year’s Student Comission president, Alex Morgan K’11, will tell you that when he first arrived on campus he didn’t have presidential aspirations. “Actually, When I came to college I said that I didn’t want to be a part of any organization, I was here to study, and that was what I was going to do.”. Generating momentum around changes on campus is a personal specialty of one of Morgan’s fellow commissioners las...

Traveling the Taijiquan-athon; Music-less Songs. Musings from off the Mat. Inside the Life and Mind of a Mugician. December 17, 2016. Sometimes it feels like there is nothing of import to say/write so nothing gets said/written. This is not one of those times. I am drinking pu-erh tea on a Saturday afternoon to delay the various tasks that are awaiting me and for some reason or another I’m writing about it. Nothing profound or mundane, either judgment would be unduly involved. December 6, 2016. I was imme...
