Preserving Yesterday For Tomorrow's People. History of Wine Production on Kelleys Island. Kelleys Island contains about 2,800 acres or 4 ½ square miles. The first grapes that were planted in 1841 were Isabella and Concord. By 1857 there were 70 acres of vineyards on the island, but within 3 years there were 230 acres of vineyards. By 1872, the vineyards on Kelleys Island could annually produce more than 160,000 gallons of wine. Preserving Yesterday For Tomorrow's People.

Preserving Yesterday For Tomorrow's People. About 1900, the Schaedler Winery became part of a group of wineries that was known as the Union Wine Company, established in 1863. The Union Wine Company ceased operation in 1911. The winery closed during Prohibition and while closed, both Schaedler and Rhien died. The winery never reopened. The August Schaedler Winery now houses the Kelleys Island Historical Preservation Corporation, and is open to the public by appointment.

Preserving Yesterday For Tomorrow's People. In 1879, Otto Brown, the former forman for the Kelley's Island Wine Company, bought the Rush Winery. He enlarged the cellar so it could hold 140,000 gallons of wine, making it the second largest winery on the island. The winery used 4 wine presses to process the grapes. It had a steam boiler to pump the grapes to a 5,000 gallons mixing vat and to heat the building. In 1902, the main winery was moved to Sandusky because of the access to the.
