Source of the Elusive Waterfall Conglomerate | Not Necessarily Geology
https://notnecessarilygeology.wordpress.com/2011/10/07/source-of-the-elusive-waterfall-conglomerate
Posted by: Alan Pitts. October 7, 2011. Source of the Elusive Waterfall Conglomerate. After spending most of the summer in Ireland and the past few weeks writing about Ireland. I kinda need to get back to Virginia. Here is an old friend. The Waterfall Conglomerate, from the Jurassic age Waterfall Formation in the Culpeper Basin, Virginia. This is a charismatic rock which we had seen as float, but never in out crop. As a goal in our study of regional geology, we challenged ourselves to find it. On the sur...

Harmonic Tremors: April 2009
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Saturday, April 18, 2009. San Francisco, April 18th, 5:12 AM. I jumped at the chance to actually be here for it. Judging by the fact that a couple of other survivors died in the past year, this is a question I - or anyone else - might not get another chance to ask. Friday, April 17, 2009. Airliner Chronicles: LAX to SFO. Cholame Valley (Parkfield's in there somewhere - just too small to see from that high up! San Andreas in San Mateo (or possibly northern Santa Cruz) County...

Harmonic Tremors: July 2009
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Monday, July 27, 2009. As evidenced by the vague conference-y posts on my Twitter. Account a few weeks ago, I was indeed at a conference from 22-26 June: the Numerical Modeling of Crustal Deformation and Earthquake Faulting workshop, in Golden, Colorado. I started writing this up right away, and then my computer crapped out. It took me this long to feel motivated to rewrite the post. Oy.). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Harmonic Tremors: March 2009
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Monday, March 23, 2009. Geosong: Demolition Hammer's "Pyroclastic Annihilation". In honor of last night's eruption of Mt. Redoubt - and its glorious timing with regards to someone called the governor of Louisiana's remark about volcanoes - I give you a death metal song about explosive volcanism. Also, "intrusive tuff," guys? Yes, the random trawling for large and menacing phrases in a volcano book without any sense of meaning seems to have been the modus operandi here.

Harmonic Tremors: February 2009
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Wednesday, February 25, 2009. And then two more. Have already addressed so eloquently. And now, the post I was planning to write before this madness went down. The first place that came to mind, without me even having to really think about it, is Carrizo Plain National Monument. The next place I want to add to the list doesn't strictly feature the San Andreas; the town of Hollister. Monday, February 23, 2009. So, since the upcoming Accretionary Wedge. 2 See a glacier. 5 Obs...

Harmonic Tremors: AGU 2009, Day Two
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009/12/agu-2009-day-two.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Wednesday, December 16, 2009. AGU 2009, Day Two. The first thing I did was head over to the Southern California Earthquake Center. The early warning session also included a talk on the Quake-Catcher Network. When I answered that one, it was often followed by, "Wow, is it really hot? I assure you, visitors and questioners, that our department is worth another look. Being in the desert and 100 degree heat does nothing to hinder the good work coming out of UCR.

Harmonic Tremors: AGU 2009, Day One
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009/12/agu-2009-day-one.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Tuesday, December 15, 2009. AGU 2009, Day One. And so, daily entries for the conference. Yes. I'll also be dumping a day-by-day of the class trip to Kīlauea in here soon - possibly later today, if the UCR booth in the exhibitor hall has low traffic.). I was, however, slightly disappointed, that the Garlock talk basically led to the conclusion that "everyone still has completely different ideas of how much this thing is slipping." Ah well! On another note, youve gotta get th...

Harmonic Tremors: May 2009
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Saturday, May 23, 2009. Seismology By Text Message. Now here's something I would have shoved everything else out of the agenda to post - had my internet not been down all week. It is so great having it back, let me tell you! Some of those five people were out of town this past Sunday, but I still got two texts immediately following the M4.7 on the Newport-Inglewood Fault. The first text message came from a friend in Burbank. It came so soon after the shaking had stopped...

Harmonic Tremors: July 2010
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Thursday, July 15, 2010. By this point, I don't think I need to actually outline the whole fiasco surrounding the motion to demote serpentine from its position as California's state rock. More prompt geobloggers than I have already outlined this idiocy. Seriously, unless you're inhaling serpentine dust like it's oxygen, you're not going to run into an asbestos problem - and those posts ( and the flurry of commentary from geotweeters. This is a state where steep slopes produ...

Harmonic Tremors: October 2009
http://harmonictremors.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Insert "rock music" joke here. Saturday, October 17, 2009. San Francisco, October 17th, 5:04 PM. Year, but with the events of twenty years ago on my mind, I think I was more aware of the possibility that it could happen again at some point in the future, near or far. I suspect that other drivers on the Bridge were thinking about it more than they might have on any other day as well. But of the ability of people to withstand it and resultantly know even better what to do in the event of the next one.
