Searching for Something, Finding Adventure: April 2010
http://internationalhillary.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Searching for Something, Finding Adventure. Thursday, April 29, 2010. Flying by the seat of my pants. On my last day in. Was directly in front of the dock and I only needed to walk a bit further in the rain. Monday, April 26, 2010. My new favorite Central American Spanish slang word is, paja. A loose translation is, lie although the actual word means straw. How I came to know this word is a funny and pathetic story. When morning came I was the one with a headache, everyone else was fine! The village we n...

Ester's journey of fun!: January 2011
http://journeyoffun.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Ester's journey of fun! Next stop: central America. Sunday, 2 January 2011. Despite begin stuck in Japan, 2010 ended pretty well and started quite peacefully! After a crazy few days in the run-up to Christmas, I managed to settle down a little and spent Christmas Eve with a friend of mine and her family. This friend did a homestay in the States when she was in high school, so her host family from back then always sends her kids a lot of presents, and she celebrates Christmas the right way! On New Year...

Ester's journey of fun!: Volunteering in Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture, Tohoku
http://journeyoffun.blogspot.com/2011/04/volunteering-in-ishinomaki-miyagi.html
Ester's journey of fun! Next stop: central America. Sunday, 24 April 2011. Volunteering in Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture, Tohoku. Ishinomaki is one of the worst affected by the tsunami that came after the earthquake. As of April 16th, 2,750 deaths have been reported and at least 2,463 unaccounted for. This is a set of ‘stretching’ exercises (though they don’t do much) that are done as a group along to music, done in most schools and companies too! At the end of the day we were assigned to doing some gard...

Ester's journey of fun!: July 2010
http://journeyoffun.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Ester's journey of fun! Next stop: central America. Tuesday, 27 July 2010. Enough of all the self-reflection, back to a bit of Japanese culture for you. It may be one of the most versatile words in modern-day Japanese. Ok, so you get the picture. This is some of modern Japan that is common knowledge. Bento, or lunchbox, fillers. My favorite, mameshiba, talking soy beans. Astroboy, the 'cutest' boy manga. 8221; and waved. Whenever I waved back I would get the most ear-piercing KAWAIIIIIIIII! So whether it...

Ester's journey of fun!: July 2011
http://journeyoffun.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Ester's journey of fun! Next stop: central America. Friday, 29 July 2011. Granada, San Juan del Sur to Costa Rica - Liberia and Monteverde. I did a little retake of the beginning of the track, and this time I was able to see the trees growing inside the crater, which was pretty cool. That evening I was asked to join a pub quiz team with 2 other people and we won! I'm getting good at those :). Funnily (and luckily) enough the last day of the celebrations, the one we were aiming for, wasn't nearly as event...

Ester's journey of fun!: Monteverde, Puerto Viejo, Panama, San Jose and home

Ester's journey of fun! Next stop: central America. Friday, 5 August 2011. Monteverde, Puerto Viejo, Panama, San Jose and home. What a delight - the fresh air and cooler temperatures up in the mountains! Just outside the reserve there was a hummingbird garden with feeders and I managed to get some excellent shots of the little hummers - keep an eye out when I put my photos up! Didn't see any monkeys in the canopy, sadly. . I said my goodbyes to Agustina (we'd been traveling together for a month! I took a...

Ester's journey of fun!: From San Ignacio to Flores to Antigua
http://journeyoffun.blogspot.com/2011/06/from-san-ignacio-to-flores-to-antigua.html
Ester's journey of fun! Next stop: central America. Thursday, 2 June 2011. From San Ignacio to Flores to Antigua. Having rested in San ignacio, I set off to the the ATM cave the next morning. I did pop by a mayan ruin called cahal pech, though to be the oldest, dating back to possibly 1200BC. But once you get in it's still a living museum. A lot of the original ceramics offered to the gods are still lying around, along with about 5 skulls - one of which has a full skeleton! Guatemala feels a lot differen...
