The Gripper: Fremantle
http://the-gripper.blogspot.com/2012/05/fremantle.html
Monday, May 28, 2012. Sacking a coach is never easy. It takes tact, time and diplomacy. You have to consult with the players, the rest of the coaching staff, the board and also take on board what the members want. Then there’s the Fremantle way: just hire a new coach while the old one is on holidays. So it is that Fremantle enter season 2012 without the very likeable Mark Harvey, in favour of the far less likeable Ross Lyon. What we know of Ross Lyon after his time as coach of St Kilda is the following:.

The Gripper: Collingwood
http://the-gripper.blogspot.com/2012/05/collingwood.html
Monday, May 7, 2012. Succession plans are funny things. The Murdoch family is one of the richest in Australia and control the world’s largest media empire. They are no doubt very smart, well educated people. They have no doubt turned their thinking prowess to the issue of a succession plan. Every week a different Murdoch is appointed as the new heir to the throne, before a massive family bust up takes them back to square one. A short history of Collingwood’s planning goes something like this:. And by the...

Sasha's Soapbox: Alan Jeans: he frightened, he inspired and he’ll be missed
http://sashasoapbox.blogspot.com/2011/07/alan-jeans-he-frightened-he-inspired.html
Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Alan Jeans: he frightened, he inspired and he’ll be missed. Last week I was saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Jeans. There are lots of ‘Yabby’ stories, one of the best being during the mid-‘80s when he made a complacent and not-surprisingly arrogant Robert DiPierdomenico. Cry during a half-time address. The story goes that Dipper had begun to believe his own hype and Yabby, in the efficiently brutal and honest manner that we’ve read about this past week, let him know it.

Sasha's Soapbox: Thanks Barry and Go Pies!
http://sashasoapbox.blogspot.com/2011/07/thanks-barry-and-go-pies.html
Monday, July 11, 2011. Thanks Barry and Go Pies! Carlton plays Collingwood next week and as a Hawthorn supporter I couldn’t be happier. Against a dispirited North Melbourne, Collingwood reminded us all on Sunday afternoon why the Magpies are the team most likely in 2011. Defeating the Kangaroos by 117 points made even Mick Malthouse look a little embarrassed after the match. And after two losses in a row, this week against a resurgent West Coast Eagles, Geelong showed us again that Cats do bleed. In what...

Sasha's Soapbox: Road Warrior
http://sashasoapbox.blogspot.com/2011/08/road-warrior.html
Monday, August 8, 2011. My profession takes me to lots of places. Last week it took me to Western Australia’s Gascoyne region. The Gascoyne is a big place, twice the size of Tasmania but with only a fraction the population. And like everywhere else in WA, the Gascoyne is big on footy. Travelling by road between Exmouth, Carnarvon and Shark Bay is no mean feat, and despite good company, sitting in the car for hours on end can be tedious. Travelling along the North West Coastal Highway with a pumped up foo...

Sasha's Soapbox: Confident, Confused, Content
http://sashasoapbox.blogspot.com/2011/09/confident-confused-content.html
Sunday, September 4, 2011. Confident, Confused, Content. With the Hawks in winning form and the finals upon us, I’m feeling quietly confident, though a little confused. I’d written the Cats off just a week ago. I’ve been writing them off all year. All season, I’ve watched and waited for the once mighty to fall, their gallant but weary warriors unable to defy the critics another week in what has been a long season. Are they a reincarnation of the unbeatable side of 2007 as some would suggest? The Hawks ju...

The Gripper: Adelaide
http://the-gripper.blogspot.com/2012/04/adelaide.html
Saturday, April 14, 2012. And so is the Gripper. This season the Gripper will look inside every coaching box in the AFL and come to grips with the characters that make the team tick. This week:. Adelaide . . . Having wowed the press gallery with his stand-up routine for 8 seasons, Neil Craig, Adelaide’s longest serving coach, was told it was time he took his comedy act on the road. Not one to intellectualise the game, Sanderson’s approach is simple: kick the ball long, over the defensive zones, to ...
