Smartest Detective in the Room: February 2010

http://lancesleuthe.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Smartest Detective in the Room. It's not easy being Sherlock Holmes' less intelligent cousin, but somebody has to do it. Sunday, February 14, 2010. The Case of the Postal Discount. Strictly speaking, that last phrase is not correct, since upon Watley's return, as he stood before me and spoke to me, I found my thoughts once more turning to him. I'll do the deducing around here, Watley," I interjected. Ah yes, the economy service, quite the thing." I spoke with some relief. But that's just the rub, there, ...

Smartest Detective in the Room: The Case of the Lingering Cough

http://lancesleuthe.blogspot.com/2009/11/case-of-lingering-cough.html

Smartest Detective in the Room. It's not easy being Sherlock Holmes' less intelligent cousin, but somebody has to do it. Sunday, November 29, 2009. The Case of the Lingering Cough. Watley and I were settled comfortably in the smoking room. I in my smoking jacket reclined elegantly in my smoking chair, while Watley in his smoking jacket perched somewhat less elegantly on his smoking chair. Watley punctuated his statement with a loud hacking noise. Watley tapped some ash into the smoking tray, sputtering.

Smartest Detective in the Room. It's not easy being Sherlock Holmes' less intelligent cousin, but somebody has to do it. Sunday, October 18, 2009. Case the Fourth: The Case of the Pseudo-Cleft Chin. I must read more! This dashing detectivator and his brilliant schemes thrilled me to the core. I would be no match for this fictional doppleganger, I mused as I turned the page. A good thing he and I weren't mortal enemies! I say, Sleuthe, are we out on an adventure this morning? I remarked happily to myself.

Smartest Detective in the Room: July 2010

http://lancesleuthe.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Smartest Detective in the Room. It's not easy being Sherlock Holmes' less intelligent cousin, but somebody has to do it. Sunday, July 04, 2010. The Case of the Vanishing Obese People. The Empire of Nippon seems remarkably devoid of the shockingly obese. Indeed, merely stout fellows are hard to come by. Such a contrast to my own Emerald Isle, which is hardly lacking in porkers. Where have all the overfed disappeared to? I pondered this question while pacing the streets, searching for my vanished umbrella.

Shou'er Journal: March 2008

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 30, 2008. Today was the first weekend since I arrived that afforded me some free time. I decided to spend today (Sunday) doing some sightseeing and looking for books downtown. I ended up taking a tour of Changdeok Palace (창덕궁 昌德宮). It's just to the east of Gyeongbokgung, which Erma and I visited last autumn. This is the main entrance gate of the palace grounds. The grounds are extensive and pleasant, and because of the guided tour policy, mostly empty. This is our tour guide. Behind the thr...

Shou'er Journal: May 2008

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 18, 2008. Another three months in Seoul have come and gone. Tomorrow I return home. Today is quite likely the peak moment of my Korean language speaking ability for my entire life. Unless of course I manage to return to Korea for an extended stay some time in the future. The blog will now become dormant again. Thanks for reading! Posted by Lance Sleuthe. Labels: Seoul National University. Friday, May 16, 2008. The Korean says Bongjyureu. We see the use of Korean ㅇ ng. At the top of the sign, ...

Shou'er Journal: May 2015

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 29, 2015. Gyeongju's old city wall. The old city wall of Gyeongju, which dates back to the 11th century, has long fallen into disrepair, and its remains are only visible in a few places. But the city has recently embarked on an ambitious project to restore sections of it. Looking to the southwest: east section of wall and structure foundation. Looking to the northwest: east section of wall and structure foundation (and boy with parasol). Gyeongju's been spending loads of money on these sorts ...

Shou'er Journal: Korean daycare

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2015/07/korea-daycare.html

Tuesday, July 7, 2015. I wasn't very concerned about curriculum or "educational philosophy". I figured that if the teachers were kind and the environment was safe and nurturing, then Tek would be well taken care of and would learn a good deal of Korean language and culture through immersion. So we settled on a place called S—, which had the additional advantage (as it later turned out) of being located a mere 2-minutes' walk from the studio apartment that Erma and I rented out as our daytime office.

Shou'er Journal: April 2015

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Koreans don't drink alcohol without eating. Doesn't matter what you are having: beer, soju, whiskey, wine, whatever. You've gotta have something to snack on while you eat. It's a basic food category, with it's own Korean word: anju. Food to accompany alcohol'. It doesn't really translate well into English, as you can see on this bilingual sign at the supermarket:. The item after the slash is anju. Nuts" is pretty much the best they could do in English. There are three anju.

Shou'er Journal: Mobile library

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2015/07/mobile-library.html

Tuesday, July 7, 2015. The city library in Gyeongju operates a mobile library bus that visits our apartment complex for an hour every Friday afternoon. This was our main source of supply for Korean-language books for Tek. The bus has rows of bookshelves on each side, and two seats in the back. Just as in any non-mobile full-size library, the seats were occupied by children sitting and reading books. Gyeongju City Mobile Library". Posted by Lance Sleuthe. July 10, 2015 at 5:18 AM. Shou'er Journal: July 2015

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Since we are now back on the States, having completed our six month sojourn, this blog will go dormant again. I would have liked to title this post with the Korean word for "good-bye", but as pointed out earlier. That's not as easy as it sounds. Posted by Lance Sleuthe. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. The play area, just inside the front door. On the left, the kids' cubbies, where their backpacks are stored; on the right, storage for toothbrushes and toothbrushing cups. We had similar prob...

Saturday, July 31, 2010. Let's walk on the right! It's been nearly two years since I was last in Korea, in October 2008. I noticed something different on my first day in Seoul. It was this sign, on a stairway in the Seoul Metro:. Korean, written in the Korean alphabet. Bottom left. English, written in the Roman alphabet. Bottom middle. Korean, written in Chinese characters. Bottom right. Japanese, written in Chinese characters.). It says: "Convenient and safe walking on the right! Say, is that Einstein?

Shou'er Journal: June 2015

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 28, 2015. Gyeongju was for a millennium the capital city of the kingdom of Silla, which ruled all of the Korean peninsula from the 7th through 10th centuries. While the legacy of its regal past is everywhere in evidence in the form of the many massive burial mounds. Scattered in and around the city, and is on display at the fantastic Gyeongju National Museum. So it's not unusual to find restaurants whose walls are decorated with classical poetry and whose bookshelves are lined with volumes o...

Shou'er Journal: February 2015

http://shouerjournal.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 26, 2015. How restaurants work (Part 1). Erma and I have been eating lunch out just about every weekday since we've been here. It's economical, healthy, and filling. The cost is between 5,000 and 7,000 Won per person (less than $5 to $7). There are more than a half dozen restaurants on this block, a convenient three-minute walk from our office in Herren Haus. Erma in front of our local "Restaurant Row", with "coffee" (more on that later). Until you get used to how these places work, yo...
