Tien types.: April 2012

Monday, April 9, 2012. Hole 12, Fossil Trace Golf Course in Golden, Colorado, where late-Cretaceous fossils and historical mining equipment are as much of a draw as the perfectly groomed fairways. It's one of the golf getaways for non-golfers that I dug up for BBC Travel. Posted by Tienlon • 天兰. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Lan Cun Education Project. The geekiest post I have ever written. Tien types.: February 2012
http://tientypes.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 18, 2012. I look into the Chinese tradition of preserving eggs for the latest issue of Lucky Peach. Available in major cities now, nationwide March 13). I've been into them since I discovered as a kid that they were much more flavorful and much less likely to make me gag than the typical mealy, factory-farmed, hard-boiled egg. But it was my dad's fascinating early experiences with them that pushed me to write this story. In San Francisco, Dong Jinmu of Longjing Manor. For all of them, ...

Tien types.: Time to do something new in a faraway land
http://tientypes.blogspot.com/2012/12/time-to-learn-something-new-in-faraway.html
Monday, December 10, 2012. Time to do something new in a faraway land. I wrote parts of Cooks, Clowns, and Cowboys. A new Lonely Planet coffee table book that's crammed with 101 fun, challenging, and enriching adventures to have around the world. Just picture yourself training camels in Egypt, painting silk in Nepal, building a hut in Senegal, banking curves on a roller derby track in California, or foraging for lunch in New York's Central Park. (Those last two are mine.) Yes, yes, yes! Pop pop fizz fizz.

Drink the Water: November 2010
http://drinkthewaterdrinkthewater.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 30, 2010. A couple hours after I landed, I found myself in a meeting. At one point, there was a lively discussion and everyone started speaking in a quick, rhythmic language I'd never heard before. I started wondering whether there was a common language in Singapore that I wasn't aware of. It sounded to me a bit like Khmer mixed with Russian. Tienlon • 天兰. Links to this post. Drink the Water: March 2010
http://drinkthewaterdrinkthewater.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 15, 2010. A way to help. I've gotten some questions about how to support WE-ACTx and the other organizations that I had the chance to work with on this trip. WE-ACTx is about to throw two major fundraisers, one in San Francisco and the other in Boston. You can attend either event or donate online. Authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman will host the San Francisco event, and there will be lots of pretty bags made by the women at Ineza for sale. So it should be neat. Tienlon • 天兰. What the...

Drink the Water: In Changsha, contradictions and youthful idealism
http://drinkthewaterdrinkthewater.blogspot.com/2012/06/in-changsha-contradictions.html
Thursday, June 21, 2012. In Changsha, contradictions and youthful idealism. They placed his 32-meter granite bust on the spot where he composed this poem, but they turned it to face a new direction. Alone I stand in the autumn cold. On the tip of Orange Island,. The Xiang flowing northward;. I see a thousand hills crimsoned through. By their serried woods deep-dyed,. And a hundred barges vying. Over crystal blue waters. Eagles cleave the air,. Fish glide in the limpid deep;. Brooding over this immensity,.

Drink the Water: April 2010

Friday, April 30, 2010. As Americans, we tend to assume that democracy is the best option. Human rights groups are jumping on the Rwandan government for achieving order through oppression. Rwanda offers ample evidence that democracy requires ripeness in the form of at least a baseline of education, common values, and economic stability. Tienlon • 天兰. Links to this post. Wednesday, April 28, 2010. The many arrests of Hutu leadership so far signals a clear distrust of allowing the majority back into power.

Drink the Water: February 2010

Friday, February 26, 2010. The sidewalk of a non-litigious society. Unlike in other parts of the world, the terms of the foreign development contracts keep the majority of the profits in Rwanda, while requiring a high reliance on local labor. These are concessions American and European companies were not willing to make. Still, there are far fewer Asian people than traditional. The friend asked. "Like a ripe banana," the woman said. Drink the Water: April 2011

Sunday, April 17, 2011. Panda does not want any of it. I went to see my neighborhood Chinese medicine doctor the other day after a bad run-in with some cockles ( little bivalves that are currently very hard to come by in Singapore. Baby massage seems awfully decadent, but I can say, four days of bitter herbal brew and my tummy is feeling much better. Tienlon • 天兰. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
