December 2016 – Northbynorth

8211; a way of life. Today we have had a real Christmas Eve snowfall, which in itself would be lovely. Unfortunately, we had yesterday rain that fell on the icy roads, trails, paths and everywhere. Thus, on our hill, the judges for figure skating would get a lot of brand-new acrobatic figures to admire – all of them without the benefit of skates! It’s soon time to stay indoors; the Christmas Peace has already been declared for the whole population. Have a wonderful Christmas! On …and waiting….

Season’s curtains – Northbynorth
https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/09/29/seasons-curtains
8211; a way of life. Once again they are in place upstairs – aromatic autumn curtains. A bit late this year – the autumn has been mild so we have let them grow. – Next week seems to be colder and we are looking for other things that might be harvested now. Plenty of tomatoes still in the greenhouses,. Plenty of chillies…. We have spent quite some time out, fishing on the lake…. Even a right-handed child with her right arm in a sling…. 8230;in the forest and in the bog. This entry was posted in Yleinen.

8211; a way of life. White ground and black mood. Oh yes, I know that snow makes the present dark landscape lighter, it protects the plants and makes lovely snow castles – I just don’t like the stuff. For me, half the world ceases to exist when it’s covered by a whitish blanket (it would cease to exist even if the blanket were blue…). We should of course be glad that most of the harvest is safely in – even from the greenhouses. Almost all carrots are in the fridge or in the freezer. The squashes are in&#...

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/11
8211; a way of life. We had a few warm days so the 15 cm of snow melted like – well, like snow. It gave us the chance to harvest the last carrots and re-plant the Jerusalem artichokes. The blue hares (at the moment white ones) had taken care of the Brussels sprout harvesting during the snowy period. – Now there is snow again…. Looking at our livingroom windowsill you could imagine that Christmas is already here – 75% of our Christmas amaryllis decided to bloom now. The warm weather has apparently played ...

Who is afraid of the big bad frost? – Northbynorth
https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/10/09/who-is-afraid-of-the-big-bad-frost
8211; a way of life. Who is afraid of the big bad frost? Well, we are. There are still a few things out that don’t like frost though, admittedly, most have been hauled in.The frost has been a frequent visitor this month and we have decided to be rather over-careful than over-confident. The squashes are in. Very soon they will most likely be out again; as you can see they are not ripe – and they turn bad astonishingly quickly. We are eating the most unripe ones as courgettes at the moment. Can I come in?

An update – Northbynorth
https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/11/04/an-update
8211; a way of life. Did I say last time that the greenhouses were mostly harvested? I take that back – today Pekka produced the final balance:. It’s now -6 – -8. 8211; all artichokes have been harvested but a couple of beds need still to be replanted. Let’s see; we can spread a tarpaulin over the ground to prevent it from freezing. And I must say I admire the broad-leaved thyme – it’s still flowering! This entry was posted in Yleinen. White ground and black mood. Pre-Christmas party →. I just freeze the...

8211; a way of life. The best laid plans. Had you asked me a week ago what we were going to do around Mothers’ Day, I would have confidently told you that – in addition to having on Sunday lunch with the extended family in a newly-opened restaurant – we would plant garlic and onion sets, sow lettuce, re-plant Jerusalem artichoke, transplant this, that and the other…. This time also two largish ide and a decent (600 g) perch). And, time-consumingly, unravelling. This is what a school of bream does to a net.

8211; a way of life. What one learns in life – or what one should learn in life – is never to say, “Do your worst! 8221; to weather – it might take you at your word. In my case, the wind was pleasant – and it was warm! 8211; as it kept the elk flies at bay; and there was a lot of delicious wetland chanterelles. A tiny part of the harvest. After some quick (and frustrated) actions the pot tomatoes from outdoors are either in the smallest greenhouse (and the heating there on) or indoors. As the last gestur...

8211; a way of life. This morning Pekka came to me with the pot in which we have our overwintered sweet basil. He said he had thought first it was a late developed sunflower – Tuftie used the sweet basil pots as her storage rooms. As you can see it isn’t – we are happy to announce the arrival of our first achocha this year. Not that we have intentionally sown it…. Sweet peppers (the cartons are finished by now, the peppers aren’t)…. Saturday Night Fever on the sky – photo taken by our son. A way of life.

8211; a way of life. May I introduce you to Nökö, our resident pygmy owl? You may call her Fluffy if you want – for fluffy she is. This is not technically best of her portraits but it shows best her essential character, 17 cm of firm determination within a soft exterior. Days are grey (when did we last see the sun? BUT I’m flooded by a sense of achievement – Eveliina’s festive jacket is at long last finished. Only two more months to the first sowings (if the seeds ever arrive)! Queen Anne’s lace an...
