By the end of March,1943 the situation was such that there was not the need for so many A Lighters working with the Army. 8 craft were working along the coast, 2 craft were at Tripoli and 9 craft were at Malta presumably having refits or repairs. Overall, therefore 27 of the original 52 craft were lost with 20 of them lost in 1941. All content provided by Alan Impey.

Alan Impey on the Web. On the 13th September,1940 the Italian Army advanced into Egypt but stopped at Sidi Birani. Hitler could not let the Italian Army be thrown out of North Africa so he sent Rommel with two Panzer divisions to Tripoli on the 14th February. All content provided by Alan Impey.

On the 12th November Tobruk was taken and as usual the A Lighters were working to unload supplies of all sorts in order to keep the momentum of the advance going. Alan Impey on the Web. By the beginning of April, the first of the A Lighters were becoming operational and the first 5 were sent to Tobruk from Alexandria with a load of tanks and other equipment. The plan was not only to keep the fortress going but to build up the capability of the garrison so that when it came to the relief operation it could play a significant role.
