DO TELL – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/do-tell
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. Vase-shaped it was. After that, it was a matter of finding something mid-story, zone-hardy, with strong color and a tolerance of city life. Spring blossoms would be nice, and perhaps a good Fall color change. Summer was something of an issue, not in terms of blooming but because the clients spent a good part of the season on island. All the plant material had to be somewhat indifferent to care. So what was the choice? Let’s go, for a moment, to another si...

THE LANDSCAPE WARDROBE – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/the-landscape-wardrobe
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. What if I told you that building a landscape was like building a wardrobe? Trees with structural interest, even those without evergreen leaves. An intricately branched tree, leafless, will still grab my attention, and there’s nothing more spectacular than a stand of white birch shimmering in a field of snow. That view is classic here in Maine and evinces the same easy elegance as my prized 1950’s cashmere coat. One thought on “ THE LANDSCAPE WARDROBE.

A TRUTH, INCONVENIENT – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/a-truth-inconvenient
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. A TRUTH, INCONVENIENT. I adore two men, neither of whom I’ve had the fortune to meet. Fellow gardener Henry Mitchell, because he cares as much about language as he does about gardening, and James Howard Kunstler, because no one writes about the misuse of land with a sharper tongue, nor has a sharper eye. Can you imagine the fun they could have had with the design? Can you imagine the fun we could have had if they’d had fun? Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

THE MEDIUM YOU KNOW – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/the-medium-you-know
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. THE MEDIUM YOU KNOW. I teach an adult ed course in land design at a local university and I’m stunned by the amount of people, talented, vibrant people whom I would think are reasonably artistic, who say they can’t fathom property design. They think I’m a genius, which is great fun but hardly true; I’ve just tapped into what I know and translated the principles of design into my own internal language. Clearly this was not a woman who would be happy with a ...

GARDENING TO THE LEAST DESIRABLE TRAIT – lindsay knapp | design to site

Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. GARDENING TO THE LEAST DESIRABLE TRAIT. Like every person, every plant has at least one characteristic that drives you crazy: peonies cascade everywhere if they’re not hooped, bee balm invades the entire garden seemingly overnight. For the sake of the plant, or the person, most of us decide early on to ignore that trait and focus on the qualities we love. But what if you could take the most troubling feature and turn it to your advantage? I can take this ...

THE TAO OF GARDEN: WATER – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/the-tao-of-garden-water
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. THE TAO OF GARDEN: WATER. Just as the power of moving water inspires creativity, the presence of still water informs my design sensibility as well. There are welcome places where water accumulates and remains, like small ponds, but there are also sites that have areas with such poor drainage that they become mini-bogs every Spring. Can you correct that mechanically? Want to learn the way of water? Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. THE L...

THE LANGUAGE OF DESIRE – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/the-language-of-desire
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. THE LANGUAGE OF DESIRE. If I asked you what you wanted, would you be able to answer? Recently I asked a student who was having trouble with a particular section of her design whether she liked the tree she was trying to design around. She said yes, but actually shook her head no as she was saying it! I don’t want that. Because the internal no cannot be overcome. So how do you go about the task of defining want in terms of the landscape? Perhaps it’s as si...

GARDEN AS PASSION – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/the-garden-as-passion
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. It doesn’t talk about landscape architecture, really, just about architecture proper, but the thing that makes me craziest about my profession is that we don’t treat spatial design outdoors the way architects treat spatial design indoors. We don’t take into account the forms we see, in the land and the existing structures, when we design the gardens or choose the materials. 3 thoughts on “ GARDEN AS PASSION. 27 January 2011 at 2:51 pm. GARDENING IN THE FOURTH DIMENSION – lindsay knapp | design to site
https://knapweed.wordpress.com/gardening-in-the-fourth-dimension
Lindsay knapp design to site. Cogito, ergo horto. GARDENING IN THE FOURTH DIMENSION. Special relativity overthrows Newtonian notions of absolute space and time by stating that distance and time depend on the observer, and that time and space are perceived differently, depending on the observer. What on Earth would make someone think of garden design when reading about theoretical physics? Look at the idea again, from the observer’s standpoint:. I am viewing, and. I am viewing, dictate. Again, the answer ...
