Saturday, October 19, 2013. The Evacuation of the Great White North - La Evacuación del Norte. Fall is a busy season in the Northwoods for all forms of life. The leaves turned quick and dirty this year, but it's always amazing to see the Northwoods turn "rave colors", if only for a little bit. Para todas las formas. Sólo unas pocas veces. En el lado este. Lago a través de. Y fui a la. Envuelto en la niebla. Al principio, y. Se tomó su tiempo. Antes de que el. Plena luz del sol. Me metí en el meollo de.

The Spruce Blog: Little Red Riding Wolf

Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Little Red Riding Wolf. I was on the road to the sea, helping my friends Brian and Kate of Seabirding. Spot on some of their trips off the Outer Banks. I parked my car along some fields where the birds were hanging out and I climbed on top of it (couldn't do this with the Altima! To get a better view. There were several harriers tacking around in the fields, and some patience was necessary to wait out the owls. Started singing behind the car and a Woodcock. I noticed some moveme...

The Spruce Blog: October 2012

Tuesday, October 30, 2012. Party in the North and Banding the Boreal. Before I left for the tropics, I made it a goal to see some "winter" birds that Ontarians see usually only in the cold months of the year, before I left. And, of course, to party. The Northwoods' hardwood trees have almost all lost their leaves but this does not mean there is no color to be seen. The Tamarack, a deciduous conifer, blazes a beautiful golden-yellow, which has replaced the reds and oranges of the hardwoods in Algonquin.

An informal birding record. Other fauna and flora. Here are some of my favourite sites, both professional and amateur. It's amazing to think that, when I started out birding, only a tiny fraction of today's knowledge even existed; and most of what did exist was inaccessible. Today, not only is there far greater knowledge - and coverage of important bird areas - but much of this is but one click away, 24/7, on the Internet. Exemplar website from Martin Cade and friends that combines observatory blog (in b...

The Spruce Blog: May 2013
http://thespruceblog.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 3, 2013. So, if there are any of you blog readers left out there, I was off the face of the Earth for a few months, but now I am back in the Northwoods and all is well. I should have reasonable internet while I'm Algonquin and should have plenty of things to write about. It is Spring, after all, and new and exciting things are happening all the time! But first, let's have a quick scroll to catch y'all up with what went down in the past couple of months! Find a comfy chair. We saw some monkeys.

The Spruce Blog: December 2014

Wednesday, December 3, 2014. A Bird in the Hand. The light was quickly fading and there was a light drizzle. A female Snowy Owl sat, treed in a solitary spruce alongside the road, her eyes locked on the pigeon in our trap a couple hundred metres away. Her body shifted gently as the wind buffeted her about her perch but her head didn't move. A pickup truck motored by and the bird lifted off her perch and far into the field. That will happen ten more times" Amanda said. In the fading light, we saw a male b...

The Spruce Blog: November 2012
http://thespruceblog.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 19, 2012. Still Kickin' in the Tropics. There hasn't been much excitement here. It's been raining here almost constantly for about a week so getting out beyond Rancho has been difficult. The birds here have been great, but again pretty regular save for some of the migrants still coming through. We had a Gray Catbird. Come to the feeders briefly the other day, on it's way further south or downslope. A Black-billed Cuckoo. Was a highlight about two weeks ago. Thursday, November 1, 2012.

The Spruce Blog: Spring as Scheduled
http://thespruceblog.blogspot.com/2014/04/spring-as-scheduled.html
Wednesday, April 2, 2014. It's that time of year again to come out of hiding and look for some spring birds. As much as I enjoyed having a "real" winter for the first time in a few years, it's nice to get out when there's a little bit more action - birds and otherwise. It's very nice to see things appear slowly and deliberately like they're supposed to. This year, the Horned Larks arrived when it was still very cold and there was little other songbird movement. The prairie subspecies praticola. Like many...
