A little local history. The name Layham has its origins in the language of the Anglo-Saxons, who started to settle Suffolk from AD 449. The village is recorded as Hligham in 995; Leiham in the Domesday Book in1086 and Leyham in documents of the 1300s. The Old English words ‘hlig’ and ‘ham’ come together to describe a ‘sheltered homestead or village’. ‘Ley’ is derived from Old English ‘leah’ meaning a ‘clearing in a wood’. Layham's parish church, St. Andrew’s, is one of the three churches in the Hadleigh Benefice. The building, situated in Lower Layham, is late 13th Century or early 14th Century. The most striking feature is the red brick west tower dating from 1742. Inside, the 13th Century hexagonal Purbeck marble font and the Victorian oak benches are of note. Notes on a family. An anecdotal family history, with visits to London, Yorkshire, Suffolk, Poland and beyond……. June 15, 2016. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by this family history malarkey. I may have set myself too undefined a task. I’ve renewed my membership of ‘Ancestry’. In Suffolk, where my grandfather’s family had lived for at least 150 years – almost certainly longer. St Andrew’s Church, Layham. I’m sure I’ll find many Bartons buried there. Nearer to home, I can go and explore Green Hammerton.

Local businesses and contractors. Layham is a mainly residential parish of around 600 people living in 240 homes. The parish is split in two by the River Brett the only direct connection being by footbridge over the river at Layham Mill. East of the river is Upper Layham in which two thirds of the people live.
