Skellefteälven är en av de stora norrlandsälvarna, ca 410 km lång. Den upprinner i Ikesjaure i Arjeplogs kommun och avvattnar sjöarna Hornavan, Uddjaur och Storavan. Älven mynnar ut vid Skellefteå stad, där man också finner ett av älvens fem fiskevårdsområden, Lejonströms FVO. Lejonströms fiskevårdsområde sträcker sig ca 2 km, från 350 meter nedanför Mobackenbadet till nedrekanten av Ytterholmen, och är det mest stadsnära fiskevårdsområdet i älven, och därmed också det mest lättillgängliga.
