It is used in a bath of molten caustic soda, where it reacts with the Silica in foundry sands reducing it to a powder which is itself removed during the quenching and washing procedure. Iron, steel, bronze, and aluminium castings are entirely cleared of the final traces of foundry sand even in the most intricate cavities which are difficult to reach by any other means. Unlike acid pickling, the sodium hydride process attacks the scale and not the underlying metal which means the metal cannot be over pickled. It only reduces the scale,rust, sand or any other contaminant present. Parts should be de-greased and where possible all additional components removed. With aluminium castings it should be noted that the process temperature range of 350-370 C will spoil any heat treatment. For treatment details refer to LT2/2014. Ceramic removal is much more successful if one or more holes have been drilled through the core first to allow the chemical more immediate access. The reagent penetrates deeply.
