Shep's African Life: October 2011
http://shepsafricanlife.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 13, 2011. One Thing I'll Miss. I just wanted to post this story while I'm thinking about it (aka before I forget). Note: Basotho brooms are just small bundles of straw; they have to bend over to sweep. I got an upright broom when I first got here because I very much dislike bending over to sweep. I'm too tall). I looked at her, pretty confused at what she meant by that; I pointed to my foot. She shook her head and repeated: "Rethabile is a FOOT! Love from Lesotho,. Two weeks ago was the...
Shep's African Life: June 2011
http://shepsafricanlife.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 30, 2011. Winding Down and Gearing Up. June 28, 2011. Morning from Sekameng. I won’t say good morning because this is the most miserable cold I think I have ever experienced, possibly in my life. I know it sounds like I just like to complain (and to some extent, I’m sure I do), but it is legitimately cold. I wake up in the morning and my house is 45 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s cold, folks. After more than 2 hours, we reached town and let me tell you, KFC has never tasted so good. My student...
Shep's African Life: November 2011
http://shepsafricanlife.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 1, 2011. I can't believe today is the 1st of November already. Really, where has the time gone? Today's lunch was samp, which I just can't stomach anymore. Most of the other teachers here are also tired of it, so I told them we'd have American lunch today: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! I let them make their own (since everyone likes different pb:j ratios) and even though they totally skimped on the peanut butter, everyone thought they were a treat. Success! Love from Lesotho,.
Shep's African Life: June 2013
http://shepsafricanlife.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 30, 2013. Buenas tardes and happy last day of June! It’s sort of a strange feeling, realizing that we’re done with five (of our nine) weeks of work – on one hand, I feel like we’re only barely past halfway done. On the other hand, I feel like we have a ton. Of work left to do! We’ve decided that we will be done with data collection by July 13. I’m sure he’d be happy for recommendations of books/movies…. And dumping some down the drain. One more exciting thing! Probably some pretty touristy t...
Shep's African Life: One Month In...
http://shepsafricanlife.blogspot.com/2013/06/one-month-in.html
Sunday, June 23, 2013. Well, as promised, here is the update, but it might be shortish. First, to put things into perspective: I arrived in Lima on May 21. So Friday marked one month in Peru. We’re planning on being done in Junín on the 26. Of July, so today is right about halfway (not including the little bit of travel I’m hoping to do after finishing). Technically we have five weeks of work left: three of data collection and two of reading, analyzing and writing for our final report. On Thursday the 13.

Shep's African Life: Día de la Bandera
http://shepsafricanlife.blogspot.com/2013/06/dia-de-la-bandera.html
Saturday, June 8, 2013. Día de la Bandera. Today marks the end of our second week in Junín – hard to believe it! Work has been going pretty well. I’m amazed at how timely people here are! If we have a meeting scheduled for 8:30, that meeting happens amazingly close to 8:30, especially if it’s with the mayor – nothing like my time in Africa! We’ve completed several more interviews with various members of the community and have a good chunk of transcribing to do. Ok, enough on that. Very good so far! Well,...
Shep's African Life: July 12, 2013
http://shepsafricanlife.blogspot.com/2013/07/july-12-2013.html
Friday, July 12, 2013. July 12, 2013. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost two full weeks since I last updated… but I guess it has. Happy July, Happy Independence Day, and Happy Last Week of Data Collection (that last one is only recognized by the three of us and those directly involved with our project here, in case you were curious). July has been pretty action-packed so far, let’s see if I can re-cap…. Working for the municipal government, he agreed to let us talk to someone else. And I’ll have...
