Life Lessons from the Barnyard: October 2011

http://lifelessonsfromthebarnyard.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Life Lessons from the Barnyard. What raising critters and kids teaches me every day! Sunday, October 2, 2011. One of the things we look forward to on the farm every spring is getting our new batch of spring chicks. Since hens only lay well for a few years, we find that getting a handful of new chicks each year ensures us of having an ongoing supply of farm-fresh eggs. Plus, those fluffy little peeps are just too cute to pass up when they arrive at the local farm stores at the end of winter! Holly lives i...

Life Lessons from the Barnyard: February 2011

Life Lessons from the Barnyard. What raising critters and kids teaches me every day! Saturday, February 26, 2011. Chickens don’t like snow. And my hen yard is on the north side of the barn, so it stays snow covered for days after a storm even as other sunnier parts of the barnyard dry out. Whenever it gets like this, my hens huddle together in their coop rather than venture outdoors, and even though this is their choice, I always feel a little sorry for them. The worst part about losing hens to a coyote,...

Life Lessons from the Barnyard. What raising critters and kids teaches me every day! Saturday, May 21, 2011. Last Saturday morning we got up early to get the girls ready to run a 5K benefit race being organized by our middle school. It was being held to raise funds for a beloved teacher who had contracted a life-threatening infection a few months ago and had accumulated soaring medical expenses as a result of his long stay in the hospital. Upon hearing the news, the girls cried and I tried lovingly to co...

Life Lessons from the Barnyard: July 2011

Life Lessons from the Barnyard. What raising critters and kids teaches me every day! Saturday, July 30, 2011. How Does Your Garden Grow? Most of my time and energy as a hobby farmer has been devoted to raising various farm animals and sharing my passion for them with local kids and adults through my classes, clubs and camps at Briar Gate Farm. But I always feel compelled to attempt to grow a few crops along the way, too, as I cherish the idea of eating home-grown vegetables from my own back yard plot.

Life Lessons from Somebody Else | Advice from somebody who doesn't know anything yet.

May 28, 2014. Another Creepy Word Conversation, Brought to You by “Rub”. I had a conversation with somebody today that, as usual, ended up being creepy. It started with a coworker claiming that he wanted to set a goal of some sort, just so he could reach that goal and then earn a “backrub” from somebody (his shoulders were hurting). He then said:. Yeah, “backrub” feels better than “back rub.”. Yeah, that space leaves a lot of time for second guessing. Backrubs ought to be approached with confidence.

Life Lessons from the Barnyard. What raising critters and kids teaches me every day! Monday, March 26, 2012. When we first got our goats, it was with the intention of raising and showing them as a project in our local 4-H club. It was mainly my older daughter who was interested in goats and 4-H, but I thought it would be good if both girls participated in the activity. Now, Holly lives in town and had no farm animals, but I assured her parents that this was not a necessity for being involved with 4-H.

All four of these equines were previously unloved and unwanted. They found a home with me and have taught me wonderful life lessons as well as invaluable lessons in horsemanship. None of them will go to the Olympics. And I would not trade one for an equine Olympian. They are each priceless in their own way. My hope is always to rise the challenge of helping each be all they can be. Scrappy Doo showed me size doesn't matter. He also offered lessons in living in the moment and forgiveness.
