Sunday, April 22, 2007. Did You Know I'm Korean? Party People All Around. Mama, tamen shi shenme ren? Mom, where are those people from? Haven't been up to much lately, just a few birthday parties and end-of-week parties. A few weeks ago our recently arrived French teacher had a birthday, and we went to the night market for dinner before Allyssa and I split off for the club. The student felt a bit afraid and losing face, and she agreed. I hope she will not disturb you any more. If she does, please let me know as soon as possible. Thursday, December 28, 2006. I'm off to Beijing tomorrow to meet up with a good friend Ellen, who will be in Beijing for about two days as part of a Vanderbilt orchestral tour of China. Since I'll be there for about five days, most of my time will be with random people, called couchsurfers, whom I've contacted online for a free place to sleep (plus gain cultural insight). Let me recount the conversation I had today with a woman whose English is much worse than my Chinese, but who doesn't know I can speak Chinese (actually, she talks too much and doesn't listen to her conversational partner to even know what he is saying). Her husband teaches at the university, and I have briefly talked with her a couple of times, and it is always really awkward. Lady: Hello, sit. Sit. Sit. Sit. Lady: Qingdao daxue laoshi happy no happy. Me: No happy, weihai happy.

Friday, February 09, 2007. Bus Rides. Subtitle: The Idiot's Guide to Pushing a Bus. Though the trip will definitely be remembered fondly, I won't forget how awful many of the bus rides were. Whether it was the fact that the seats were often crammed so close together that it was impossible to put your legs in front of you, or the simple lack of cleanliness, at times I would have almost rather walked. After sitting in this bus, yes, I'd very much like to go to Australia! Another stop, another plan of action.
