A Space Age Space | Basement as Metaphor

Finding meaning in life's messy places. A Space Age Space. September 16, 2013. Look for the unveiling of the new basement studio space in the coming weeks. But for now, my next couple of blog posts will be about [drumroll, please] my adventures in upholstery! Nate’s words have been on my mind a lot lately–especially while I’m sitting in my living room. I know I’d prefer furniture that’s smaller in scale, but weightier in substance. To use Nate’s language, I want furniture that, tells a story. About conne...

A Lovely Mess | Basement as Metaphor

Finding meaning in life's messy places. August 14, 2013. Aunt Ercelle’s Jewelry Box. Last week, my kids and I made a road trip to Wadesboro, North Carolina to visit my mom. My Aunt Ercelle died in June of 2012. My family and I had stopped by her house to visit her Memorial Day weekend. I knew that she didn’t seem well. During our return trip home, while stopped at a gas station, I received the call from my mom with the sad news. As I mentioned, she was a bit outrageous. I’ll never forget when she sto...

Getting Past the Desk | Basement as Metaphor

Finding meaning in life's messy places. Getting Past the Desk. June 12, 2013. Photo from the Craigslist post for this desk. Today is Wednesday, June 12. This desk has been in our house for about 5 years. For most of that time, it lived happily in my daughter’s room. But, with the advent of middle school, the baby desk was branded as inadequate and banished to the utility room with all the other larger scale cast-offs. Your cast-off becomes someone else’s commodity. A couple of days went by. Nothing.

The Desk Sold, It Just Took a Little Vision | Basement as Metaphor

Finding meaning in life's messy places. The Desk Sold, It Just Took a Little Vision. June 24, 2013. A quick update on my last post: I sold the desk. Three days ago, an email appeared in my inbox with the title, Child’s Desk and containing the simple inquiry, Hello, is your child’s desk still available? Without much fanfare, Krystle (the sender of the email) and her lovely family (husband and two cute-as-pie daughters) came by to pick it up on Sunday. Okay, I was. So, maybe “vision” (something...Instead, ...

The Finished Product! | Basement as Metaphor

Finding meaning in life's messy places. October 14, 2013. The newly upholstered chair! The chair is finished. It’s already at home in the living room cozying up to an existing throw pillow as if they were soul mates. It’s hard to believe that this is the same chair that, at first, was such an outcast that my son wouldn’t help bring it in from the car until he was sure that none of the neighbors were watching. What a difference a little fabric and a lot of staples can make! The Chair, before. While busily...

Journey through Seminary: October 2009
http://journeythroughseminary.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 30, 2009. Research and Study Week. For FQI, we are writing a 10-page midterm that I am most of the way done with. I'm writing on everything from the cross to revelation and now principalities and powers. Fascinating and frustrating stuff! Amber just finished her first week as a nanny. She seems to be enjoying it, and I am so happy she doesn't have to work at Lush anymore! No, that's not a subtle way of saying she's pregnant, haha.). Friday, October 9, 2009. I'm at like 205 right now, and ...

Journey through Seminary: December 2009
http://journeythroughseminary.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 16, 2009. Well, I've pretty much reached the end of my first semester here at LPTS. It's been wonderful! I've met so many awesome people and learned from so many awesome professors. I feel truly blessed to be here, and I hope Amber does too! We are not allowed to use any resources during the writing either. I'm pretty scared about this one! Looking forward to the Christmas season and seeing family and friends. Hopefully, this will be more restful than frantic! A Tale of 2 People Billy...

http://journeythroughseminary.blogspot.com/2010/02/semester-of-craziness-fellowship.html
Saturday, February 27, 2010. Semester of Craziness and Fellowship Nomination. This semester has started off with a bang! They didn't waste any time with anything! Scripture I (Part 2) with Johanna Bos - We completed the Torah (wait, didn't Jesus do that? And we are now on to Joshua and Judges. I like Johanna a lot. I think she knows her stuff! The Art of Teaching with Brag Wigger - Teaching is my first love (sorry Amber! And I think I'm going to enjoy this class a great deal. I'm a little wired right now...

Finding meaning in life's messy places. The Wisdom of the Refrigerator. May 20, 2013. Okay, so I’m two weeks in. It feels like a bit of a progress report is in order. After 3 trips to the dump, 4 trips to our local mega thrift store Value Village, and countless bags of trash in our own garbage cans, I am happy to report that I can actually find the furnace in the furnace room (see picture below)! The washing machine swished, the cramped room’s walls came in even closer. We never really knew the owners of...
