couchville: August 2006

Wednesday, August 23, 2006. Wish you were here. Maybe he wasn’t as great as I remember. Maybe people like Leonardo Di Caprio, Elijah Wood, Tobey Maguire and new guns like Topher Grace and Orlando Bloom just overshadow our faint memory of River Phoenix. Maybe the shining light of his brother Joaquin has now finally overtaken (what a battle that has been). Or do I just like any movie with gadgets in it? 3 Stand By Me (1986). This is probably the greatest film about childhood friendship that has ever be...

Monday, July 31, 2006. Well it’s that time of year again. Yes it’s my holiday time. I’ve packed my bag and I’m off to. The Melbourne International Film Festival. One of my loveliest friends (hoo roo Jackie! It’s not easy being green. Saturday, February 25, 2006. As Melbourne was hit with its own little superstorm today, the downstairs bathroom just seemed to come undone at the seams. Water was flooding in from all sorts of nooks and crannies at an alarming rate. Needless to say I spent most of my day. On the couch - no midday movie for me! The combination of Randy Quaid, Tom Skerrit and Cameron Daddo mean we are in for a night of quality viewing.not. In its defence bad tv on a Sunday night is always welcome. Mind you it would probabl...

Friday, June 30, 2006. Up up and away. And what of Brandon Routh? Again, as with so many details in the film I felt that his casting was not so much about filling Supermans shoes but filling Reeves. Problem is Christopher Reeve turned out to really be a Superman. There is no filling those shoes. He’s nice to look at, great teeth, full head of hair. I’m tired of seeing him not get the girl, somebody throw him a bone. Posted by Ramona @ 12:11 AM. Friday, June 23, 2006. I am an early riser and so it wasn’t ...

Monday, May 29, 2006. Workin hard to make a livin. There has been alotta talk about work lately among my circle of friends. Some of us don’t have any, some of us don’t want any, others are looking for escape routes as we speak. But there is one amongst us, my dear friend Sonie, who saw a job in the paper she really liked, put in an application, interviewed for it and got the job. Snaps for Sonie! Best Line: The only real challenge with this job, is trying to look busy when there's nothing to do. The magi...

Sunday, April 30, 2006. What are you lookin' at? It is not uncommon for a friend to ask me on Monday So what’s on this week? For normal people who have rich and fulfilling social lives the answer may be work, dinner out, band, play, footy, lunch, love, drive, whatever . Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to try and fit all those fantastic things in too, but as my friends know, when you ask me what’s on? The Cars That Ate Paris (10pm Show Greats) a great early early (1974! Peter Weir film. Creepy tale of a...

Tuesday, March 28, 2006. You're off the Island. But I must admit I do have a weakness, one that began 12(! Seasons ago with the now famous catchcry :. Tonight was episode 1 of Survivor Panama: Exile Island where we were introduced to our new castaways - and what an extremely American bunch they were. Favourites so far include The Missile Engineer, The Astronaut and The Writer (can you guess which one is doomed from the get go? There was a Dolphin Trainer, a Chef, and Fireman too at one point. I get a wee...

couchville: January 2006

Wednesday, January 25, 2006. The viewing of this series has coincided with me toying with the idea of going to New York. I sat in the travel agency last week and I was transfixed by the wall of brochures. But I've never considered Russia, Kazikstan, Syberia as travel destinations. I'm 'strictly pavement' as Woody Allen would say. But Long Way Round at least gave me a glimpse from the couch of what these places look like and it's great to have them rattling round in my head. Monday, October 23, 2006. First of all, stop reading this review. not because of spoilers there aren’t any, and not because I’m going to bag the film I’m not. Simply because The Departed is something you have to see because it is the new Scorsese film and you have to make up your own mind about it. I am however going to go on and on about the performances. The Father Figures First. Ray Winstone as Jacks right hand is underused here. I wasn’t even aware that he was in it and I wanted more but quite fr...
