Compliant Subversity: Things I would do differently
http://jeltzz.blogspot.com/2014/10/things-i-would-do-differently.html
Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Sunday, October 26, 2014. Things I would do differently. These aren't things I regret, but they are things I would do differently with the benefit of hindsight. I don't think what I did were mistakes, but now I see things could have been done differently. 1 I wouldn't have come to the field intending to do a PhD. 2 I should have studied Mongolian more aggressively. I think this would have brought me to fluency faster and deeper. Again, I think we...

Compliant Subversity: February 2014
http://jeltzz.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Friday, February 28, 2014. 3 Projects I'd like to focus on. Over on the Mongolia blog. You can read five points for prayer. Over here I want to talk/ramble about 3 projects that I want to get done. Where does the Ørberg fit in? Beyond the fabled Greek Ørberg, I can think of almost a half-dozen language teaching/learning related projects I'd like to pursue, but right now I think this is the one that needs completion. Of course, time is my limi...

Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Friday, October 31, 2014. Chapter 3 of a Greek Natural Method. This one's not as long as earlier chapters. I decided not to get into uncles and aunts at this stage, is the main reason. Anyway, enjoy! Chapter 4 coming: whenever it's ready. All three chapters are in one pdf: Greek Natural method. I made a few corrections to chapter 1, thanks to some excellent feedback! And the audio recording process really helped me notice a few errors too. Looks ...

Compliant Subversity: June 2014

Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Monday, June 30, 2014. 1 Peter 2:18-25 Exegetical Notes. It seems relatively clear that the alternatives are scribal expansions to clarify the meaning of χάρις. Which by itself has reasonably strong mss support. The reading as stands has strong textual support, but the meaning of the phrase is unclear. ἀγαθήν. May have been substituted to clarify the phrase, with the last two variants explicable and conflations of the two. Leaving behind an examp...

Compliant Subversity: April 2014
http://jeltzz.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Sunday, April 27, 2014. The Gospel Coalition like to talk about Theological Famine Relief. As far as I can tell this might well mean “sending English language resources to the third world”. Like a whole bunch of ESV Study bibles to Africa. Meanwhile, one of my second year students told me this week, handing in an essay on Ezra-Nehemiah, that he had never written an essay before. It seems to me that there are two main issues. Pray for the work here.

Compliant Subversity: A slower road
http://jeltzz.blogspot.com/2014/10/a-slower-road.html
Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Friday, October 24, 2014. At the end of 2007 I graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity, and at that time I had some consideration of immediately entering a doctoral program. I decided not to, for a variety of reasons. I suppose that if I had, I might have completed in 2010 and be 4 years post-degree by now. I can relate to this as a classics major who has about a dozen courses in philosophy under his belt. I feel like Im in a holding zone now: ...

Compliant Subversity: July 2014
http://jeltzz.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. 1 Peter 3:18-22 Exegetical Notes. V18 περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν. There are a wide variety of varients. I think it’s more likely that ἀπέθανεν. Was an alteration of ἔπαθεν. The 2nd person is more likely to have been changed to the 1st, than vice versa. As Metzger says, though it is difficult to understand, no other reading makes better sense, indeed they are likely attempts to make sense of the text. I think we can largely agr...

Writings on Languages, Classics, Patristics, and Theology. Thursday, May 29, 2014. A reader's version of Basil's "Against Eunomius"? Part of my summer work is to go over and translate Basil of Caesarea's early treatise, Against Eunomius. Ἀλλ’ ἵνα σαφέστερον [22]. Ὃ λέγω γένηται, κατὰ μέρη τὸν λόγον διελόμενος [23].
