Site Selection for an Organic Vineyard

http://mail.grapeseek.org/orgsite.htm

Organic Vineyard Site Selection. A superior vineyard site can make organic growing a more realistic goal. A climate that is not too hot and humid will increase your chances of success. If site selection is a non-issue because you already own one, you should attempt to manipulate vineyard layout with your organic aspirations in mind. A vineyard on the Mosel. Hot spots" for Pierce's Disease should certainly be a site selection influence. But the new vector from South America, the Glassy Winged Sharpsho...

Clean grapevine tendrils off wires each year.

http://mail.grapeseek.org/cleanwires.htm

Last year's tendrils on trellis wires should be cleaned off of the wire. They make a great host site for mildew and blackrot spores which will be ready to germinate as soon as conditions permit. The tendrils on the upper wires may not have hardened-off until after you finished spraying, so whatever is on them was not threatened by pesticide and is in a perfect position to be washed onto new annual growth. Organic Vineyard Soil Nutrients

http://mail.grapeseek.org/orgsoil.htm

Organic Vineyard Soil Nutrients. Plant tissue analysis (leaf petiole testing) of samples from established vineyards will tell you everything you need to know about the needs of your vines. The fees for these tests are very significant (Penn State charges $18 per variety). Soil testing should be done in conjunction with site selection, and, unless you are performing it yourself to save money, should be replaced with tissue analysis as the vineyard matures. Another drawback of using field manure, is the ve...

Grape Varieties for the Organic Grower

http://mail.grapeseek.org/orgvar.htm

Organic Vineyard Grape Varieties. We have successfully overcome the temptation to make varietal recommendations on this page. Your plans for your vineyard, your own research and local advice are much more meaningful sources of information. However, links provided on the page of that name (see organic index page) may help with decision making. Add disease resistance and perhaps put it at the top of their list. The genetic heritage of French hybrids may cause sensitivity to sulfur to be a problem. Cham...

Dormant spraying after pruning yields a cleaner vineyard

http://mail.grapeseek.org/dormantspray.htm

A post-pruning spray of lime sulfur solution on all parts of the vine is generally recognized as a good idea. This material is available in several preparations and may be called "dormant oil.". Apply the material liberally with a hand gun, or air blast with nozzles aimed low. Apply before bud swell! The material will be injurious to breaking buds. Be assured, however, that there are enemies hiding on the vine in the form of mildew spores and some insect larvae (see grape scale, brown scale and flea beet...

GrapeSeek - The world's oldest grape growing and wine industry portal

We are grapeful to be back after 7 years! Our sites are self-funded with assistance from external ads. Current income for March from all our sites is AdSense: $0.87 Amazon: $4.90. Thanks from Mike, Isi and Haley for your support! Please bear with me as I remove all broken links from this site and test new ad units. It might look ridiculous at times.sort of like I do before my coffee! GrapeSeek was founded almost one year after Yahoo as a directory of grape growing and winemaking resources. Lon Rombough w...
