Off the ventilator →. February 1, 2011. I stepped off the elevator on the 5. Floor (the spinal cord injury [SCI] floor) and saw another patient in a wheelchair and thought it will be great to one day see Fred roaming the hall of Magee’s 5. Floor in a wheelchair. Walked down the hall into Fred’s room 546 and he’s sitting up in a wheelchair talking to a speech therapist! He was in good spirits. The open wounds on his lower back and butt that have become a concern are responding well to treatment.

February 8, 2011. After a bad day yesterday, Fred was his usual ebullient self today. When I arrived, his daughter Sara was rigging a length of cloth over the structural member in the ceiling that runs above Fred’s bed. From his wheelchair, he then grasped both ends of the hanging cloth and did Magee wheelchair pull-ups , 3 sets of 10. Lunch today included pureed hamburger. He polished that off quickly. Pureed hamburger →. February 6, 2011. Fred has made remarkable progress in the past two weeks. He’s been off the ventilator for more than 3 days now. He is sitting up in the wheelchair for several hours a day. He’s eating pureed food – have you ever eaten pureed spaghetti and meat sauce? And he is talking a blue streak. Fred has always been a voluble guy. It’s great to hear him return to form. Don’t they know what real pain is? He is learning about things he never thought he would have to consider skin c...

Milestones | pullforfred
https://pullforfred.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/milestones
January 29, 2011. Good visit with Fred Friday. He was off the ventilator for 14 hours yesterday. Spent an hour and 45 minutes out of bed in a wheelchair. We talked about milestones he is looking forward to. No one is really sure the order these might occur, but here is what he is looking forward to:. Removing the neck brace – it’s allowing the injured vertebrae at the top of the spine to heal. But boy is it uncomfortable. About 4 weeks till removal. This entry was posted in Uncategorized.
