Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports. Tuesday, 11 December 2012. Opportunity meets Challenge - an open letter. I find myself in a very exciting but potentially very difficult situation and it’s complex. A little background first. I have been running long for 23 years. Many of my most memorable days have been on the trail and many of my closest friends, particularly my wife, I met through that love of the trails. Events must be permitted, insured and safe for the runners. The area where the event is held shou...

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports: June 2012

http://markhartell.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports. Friday, 22 June 2012. A time to appreciate. I have, of course, spent many hours over the past few years considering what motivates me to run long. This is a necessary process, I think, for anyone facing the realities of ageing and slowing down. It was, after all, 23 years ago that I ran my first Bob Graham round with 3 cigarette breaks and almost no knowledge of suitable running food. To be near the front of a race gives me a kick; to challenge a record likewise. A littl...

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports: A Great fortnight and a FKT (Fastest Known Time)

http://markhartell.blogspot.com/2012/03/great-fortnight-and-fkt-fastest-known.html

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports. Sunday, 25 March 2012. A Great fortnight and a FKT (Fastest Known Time). Two weeks with some great and varied running. Still recovering from yesterday’s effort but more of that later. The week after our Santa Cruz island and Backbone Trail adventures was quiet but I was entered for the Chuckanut 50k on 17. March This year would have been a great race as organiser Krissy had obtained a huge permit for 1000 runners and was celebrating the 20. Place was all I could manage b...

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports: San Diego 100

http://markhartell.blogspot.com/2012/06/san-diego-100.html

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports. Friday, 8 June 2012. Back to the fray. Unfinished business takes me back to the Laguna Mountain area, around 2 hours inland from San Diego and on the edge of the Anza Borrego. Last year I pulled out at mile 64; cold, tired and spent. With a little trepidation but also some excitement I will toe the line as number 78 at 7am US time (3pm UK time) to revisit the early miles and discover the later ones. Full race report to follow next week once I've got it done! You can expe...

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports: September 2010

http://markhartell.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Ultrarunning and Mountain Sports. Wednesday, 22 September 2010. Today I lost a running friend. My beloved collie, Islay, reached the end of her race of life today. A few days shy of her 16. Birthday she needed a major operation that there was little chance she would recover from and so, with a little help from modern medicine, the lights went out. Back in 1994 we selected one of a litter of six from a VHS video and then drove all the way up to Kirkcaldy in Fife to pick-up our little bundle of fur. By the...

Team Vasque 2009: April 2009

http://teamvasque.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 April 2009. Yon bonny banks and braes. Highland Fling, 2009. Mind, it's a couple o' quid mair fir the Sassenachs fae doon sooth - unless ye wan' tae cough up tae jine Scottish Athletics). That's enough of the Scottish accent. But it's good to be running on home turf, and the Highland Fling does have a special character all of it's own. It's run with a sense of humour - the race instructions really are available in Doric. And the running itself? Seems the path along the bonny, bonny banks reall...

Team Vasque 2009: Closer to nature?

http://teamvasque.blogspot.com/2009/08/closer-to-nature.html

Thursday, 20 August 2009. As I climbed up the slow steady rise out of the valley from Boot a startled vole scurried out of the pool of light from my headtorch into the dark rough grass of the fell. You're certainly closer to nature in races like the Lakeland 100 – when was the last time you saw a vole? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Wednesday, 24 June 2009. Exciting developments coming soon. I've been trying out a pair of the new Transistor shoes that should hit the shops in early 2010 - it's exciting stuff! Ah well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and I'll have my new shoes to keep me happy :) Look out for them - they rock! Mark:Blog: www.markhartell.blogspot.com. 25 June 2009 at 14:41. Team Vasque 2009: March 2009

http://teamvasque.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 31 March 2009. Anglo-Celtic Plate and UK 100km championships 2009. If a butterfly flapping its wings in Guadeloupe can cause a hurricane, what happens when you take 50-odd ultrarunners and you make them run in tiny wee circles for 100 kilometres? That's got to build up a heck of a lot of vorticity. I'd take cover – there could be a bit of a storm on the way. In the UK championship (8. Thursday, 19 March 2009. Team Vasque 2009: Three Peaks Yacht Race win

http://teamvasque.blogspot.com/2009/06/three-peaks-yacht-race-win.html

Thursday, 25 June 2009. Three Peaks Yacht Race win. We had come to the realisation after the Scafell Pike run that we were out of the running for the king of the mountains trophy and decided to pull out all the stops on the sailing and running to try to win the overall prize: it was a gamble all strategy. We sailed and rowed up the upper part of Loch Linnhe. We had maybe 3 more hours of rowing: mostly sailor powered, but some powered by the runners. We were greeted by a beautiful dawn at the head...I was...

Team Vasque 2009: Another free t-shirt

http://teamvasque.blogspot.com/2009/07/another-free-t-shirt.html

Tuesday, 21 July 2009. IAU World Trail Challenge, Serre Chevalier. Does anyone else get fed up with free race t-shirts? I've lost track of the colossal quantity of unneeded and unworn kit I've gained this year. The 'May Hill Massacre' t-shirt was the first if I remember rightly, with a tasteful dripping chainsaw logo. Draycott Water 35 and a local 10k soon followed with some fairly naff shirts covered with sponsors logos. Just what I needed. Another t-shirt. 24 July 2009 at 06:11. View my complete profile.

Team Vasque 2009: Slow progress east of Lismore Island

http://teamvasque.blogspot.com/2009/06/slow-progress-east-of-lismore-island.html

Wednesday, 24 June 2009. Slow progress east of Lismore Island. Progress has been slow up the east side of Lismore Island. There was a good gust of wind half way up that had us tanking along at 8 knots, but that died almost as soon as it started. We then got to the Lynn of Lorn which is a little strait at the north end of Lismore. The tide turned here. The marine life continues to be very exciting. Weve seen beautiful jellyfish sculling for whatever they eat, otters swimming around watching us and sea...
