Let's start with an example. What follows is the smallest code that parses a list of numbers. In this example we parse a few numbers separated by spaces. Let's run the code first. You can run the code by calling it with. Perl number.pl Trying to parse: 1 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 Output: $VAR1 = [ '1', '3', '5', '8', '13', '21', '34', '55' ];. The example shows which text it tries to parse followed by the array that it found. Start : = numbers numbers : = number action = : array number [ d] :discard ws ws [ s].

Marpa is a library written in C, with a Perl wrapper. It is dedicated to parsing. That is, people who wish to write parsers incorporate Marpa into their programs. You start using Marpa by providing it with 2 inputs, a grammar and an input stream which may or may not conform to the given grammar. This means Marpa parses the grammar and stores it in RAM in some convenient form. Such a grammar specifies both what tokens are acceptable, and the order (syntax) in which they may appear. Parsers shine in situations where there are many discrete parts in sequence with a certain structure. A grammar describes the rules of this structure. The discrete parts of the structure are the lexemes (or tokens) that make up the sequences. The lexemes are groups of one or more characters. These are the atoms of the language.
