Ramblings of a HS Math Teacher. How Do We Assess Efficiency? November 3, 2015. A problem on a recent assessment I gave to my 9th graders caused me to reflect upon the role of efficiency in mathematical problem solving. In particular, how much value is there in asking students to be efficient with their approaches, if all paths lead to a similar solution? And should / could we assess efficiency? So, what’s wrong with the solution? Nothing, nothing at all. Mdash; Dan Anderson (@dandersod) October 28, 2015.

Ramblings of a HS Math Teacher. ISTE 2015 – Keep the Learning in Focus. Twitter Math Camp – A Scalable Model for PD? I Really LOVE These Math Tools, But…. July 9, 2015. Some Q&A here….I’m hoping other will share their experiences and ideas. Q: I’m not a 1-1 school. How does this fit in my school? Was a welcome online addition, and allowed for many class investigations. Q: But don’t your kids end up texting in class? Q: Do you mandate your students purchase graphing calculators? But if you take a look at ...

MT|SM: December 2013

Wednesday, December 11, 2013. I gone a clear month and a half without writing anything here. I just haven't had anything profound to say. This is certainly not an original blog post. Bloggers fall in and out of writing spurts all the time. But I'm trying to figure out why. Why have I had a general disinterest lately in reading twitter and checking my reader? What's going on with me that I'm just not finding the value that I used to? Reason #2: General contentment with my practice. It's also nice that my ...

Alg 1 and 2 Filing Cabinet. Friday, July 3, 2015. With a new classroom comes new decorations! I'm super pumped that my new classroom has a bulletin board. Because I'm a geek like that. But with a bulletin board comes a responsibility. It needs to be filled! I picked this up at Walmart months ago because it was $.10 and I was feeling hopeful that I might need it someday. Looks like that was a good buy! I've pinned a lot of stuff on Pinterest that I need to go back to. Here's. Tapes at the store. Subscribe...

Sunday, November 27, 2016. Practice Structure - Slap It! The next practice structure that I'd like to share is Slap It! Here are the rules for Slap Jack provided by Bicycle Cards. Object of the Game: The goal is to win all the cards, by being first to slap each jack as it is played to the center. The Play: Beginning on the dealer’s left, each player lifts one card at a time from their pile and places it face up in the center of the table. When the card played to the center is a jack, the fun begins!

Thursday, June 30, 2016. Earthquakes Part 2 - Circles. I borrowed this lesson from John Stevens. As a quick side note, this is what I love about the MTBoS community on Twitter. You build a network of creative educators from literally all over the world and your own lessons improve because of the sharing that happens. Now, my students and I live in central Pennsylvania. We have the occasional earthquakes, but they are they type that only the most observant people even notice. Here is a link. This part tak...

Sunday, April 10, 2016. Barbie Zipline – Applying Angle of Elevation. I modified this activity from one done by Matt Vaudrey. I believe that they used the activity to study Pythagorean Theorem and the distance formula. Here is a write-up. Of John’s lesson. I used it to have students practice solving simple trigonometric triangles involving angle of elevation. I started the lesson with the same video. After they did this, I gave them two starting heights for the final zipline that they would perform in fr...

Monday, December 26, 2016. Practice Structures: Tic Tac Toe. Tic Tac Toe is an easy way to have students work on building fluency and is more engaging than just completing a worksheet. You could try this activity with either of two different approaches. The activity was made to help students practice graphing linear inequalities. Is an activity that I created with this format. The activity was designed to have students practice finding the surface area and volume of spheres. Sunday, December 18, 2016.

8 is my lucky number. Monday, January 2, 2017. Goodbye 2016 Hello 2017. I have been enjoying reading new 2017 posts on Twitter from #MTBoS and figured I should wrap up 2016 with some stats and set up 2017 with some goals. On my blog, I wrote 73 posts this year! I looked back to see I wrote my first blog post on 3/11/13, my husband's birthday. I have written 198 posts in total, so last year was busy! I do love writing, blogging, reflecting, and having a journal of my work. 3 conferences so far. A Day in t...
