A Mathematician's Life

Sunday, June 8, 2014. Third day in Paris: bigger stuff. For my third day in Paris, I planned to stop by some of the larger structures, e.g. the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel tower, and the Notre Dame. Along the way, I ran into the Musée des Archives Nationales - a fine old building and a nice place to just sit and enjoy the beautiful weather (a welcome contrast to my first two days in Paris, which were overcast, and saw a few sprinkles). In my last post I mentioned heavily-armed military patrols within Par...

A Mathematician's Life: Second day in Paris: the Louvre

http://mathematicianslife.blogspot.com/2014/06/second-day-in-paris-louvre.html

Saturday, June 7, 2014. Second day in Paris: the Louvre. The Louvre is large enough that it got an entire day to itself. On the way there, I walked past the Colonne de Juliet, a column originally intended to celebrate the fall of the Bastille, but not finished until after the July Revolution. In which King Charles X was overthrown. Before getting inside the Louvre, I had to wait in a line of persons over a quarter-mile long. What you see here is only a small piece of the whole queue. Fortunately,...So mu...

A Mathematician's Life: May 2014

Saturday, May 31, 2014. A trip to Paris. Obviously this blog has been silent for an extended period of time. You see, I found that while life as a graduate student is interesting, it is generally interesting in ways that do not lend themselves to being interesting to other people. However, in the past week, I've been doing (and seeing) things with much more popular appeal, so I will share them with you. You see, there is going to be a workshop on algebraic groups. Like many older French buildings, it has...

Tuesday, November 15, 2011. At long last - a new post! I haven't posted for such a long time that I don't any apologies would make up for it. So, I shan't try. As you all know, I'm no longer in Cornell (and haven't been for quite some time! Only sort of. more on that later. In any case, it's been fun learning with students who are really serious about what the're doing. Speaking of math, the paper a couple of students and I wrote over the summer is going to be published! Now for something totally unrelat...

A Mathematician's Life: August 2012

http://mathematicianslife.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 23, 2012. When the glaciers receded at the end of the ice age, they carved myriads of gorges out of the underlying shale. So, there are dozens of waterfalls in the area. Also, I managed to find an apartment about five miles from town, so from where I live, it's like rural Nebraska in a lot of ways. The one big difference is: no corn! Speaking of where I live, here it is:. And this is what my apartment actually looks like:. Finally, a couple more pictures:. For the building.).

A Mathematician's Musings. Thoughts about math, education, and the world through the lens of a teacher. January 9, 2017. January 9, 2017. I used to give out extra credit. Not just at the beginning of my career, but right up through last year. I just thought it’s something that teachers do, even though I knew better, and even though it never really accomplished what I wanted it to accomplish. So finally, this year, I told my students that I was done. Those awesome challenge problems? So what is the result...
