Math Mama Writes...

Sunday, January 7, 2018. Logic Puzzle - What Does Your Friend See? I love logic puzzles, and was drawn by the title saying this was a hard one. Usually Nautilus is well-written, but their version of this puzzle isn't as good (in my opinion) as the original, blogged about by Presh Talwalkar. Like logic puzzles (Linda). Math Mama Writes...: Teaching My Son (Post One of Many?)

http://mathmamawrites.blogspot.com/2015/05/teaching-my-son-post-one-of-many.html

Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Teaching My Son (Post One of Many? For math, we're using Beast Academy. We started with book 3A. Yes, the 3 means third grade. We don't mention it, but he knows this is "supposed to be" for younger kids. Beast Academy. Books (perfect squares, variables, counting, logic, probability). I'm sure they are excellent, but my goal was to find a way to pare it down, so he gets as much as possible of the foundational skills he'll need, in the short time we have before he starts 8th grade.

Math Mama Writes...: Book Review: The Archimedes Codex

http://mathmamawrites.blogspot.com/2015/06/book-review-archmedes-codex.html

Saturday, June 20, 2015. Book Review: The Archimedes Codex. I bought this book because I wanted to understand more about Archimedes' role in the ancient development of calculus ideas. When I got it, I was worried it would be another book I wouldn't want to wade through. I was so wrong! By Reviel Netz and William Noel, is fascinating. Like much g. Ood science writing these days, The Archimedes Codex. Reads like a detective story. It is gripping! This is perfect summer reading. Enjoy! Check out the book!

Saturday, August 8, 2015. Links on Saturday (lots for First Day). Julie Ruelbach wants help. Getting more specific with her great first day plans. They already look fabulous to me. I will try to use some of her great ideas. One of her commenters suggested this Scientific American article on interleaving. This may make me change my practices. And this Psychology Today article with 6 study tips. Looks helpful for students. I like this video (the dot. Talking Points, intro by cheesemonkey. And lots of files.

Math Mama Writes...: Books

Ages 2 to 6). One of the earliest math skills, more basic perhaps than counting, is noticing attributes. This book has no words, and yet it tells dozens of stories, each about opposites. Noticing the one attribute that shows opposites in the detail-filled pictures is a math game your child will want to play again and again. Ages 2 to 7). Ages 2 to 7). Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar. You may also enjoy Anno's Math Games. Anno has written over 40 books, most available in English. By Lily Toy Hong. A poo...

Math Mama Writes...: Math Teachers at Play #58...

http://mathmamawrites.blogspot.com/2013/01/math-teachers-at-play-58.html

Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Math Teachers at Play #58. Is up at Let's Play Math. Denise starts it off with a puzzle:. Is a [composite, that is, not prime] integer the sum of whose digits is equal to the sum of the digits in its prime factorization. Well, 58 will help us to get a better grasp on that definition. Observe:. 58 = 2 × 29. And that’s all there is to it! I suppose we might say that 58′s last name is Smith. [Nah! What is the only Smith number that’s less than 10? January 18, 2013 at 11:58 PM.
