Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Our Lady of the Snows. The title Our Lady of the Snows comes from a legend concerning a Roman nobleman and his wife who wished to bequeath their possessions to the ****** Mary. They prayed for some sign as to where they should put their treasures. The next day, the fifth of August, snow was found at the summit of the Esquiline Hill in Rome, where the Basilica was eventually built. View of the Nave. The Globe Spinner: April 2015

http://www.mattschmalzel.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 27, 2015. This well-known scriptural passage is rendered here in Kriol, an English-based creole language spoken by many Australian Aboriginal peoples in the Northern Territory. Creole languages are fascinating to me because they rely so much on actually speaking the words, as the language being creolized. As sa, qui. As ki, dite. Etc) I didn't understand what I was reading until I tried reading it aloud to myself. Brought to you by The Globe Spinner. Saturday, April 18, 2015. Brought to you...

Instresses: May 2016

http://instresses.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 25, 2016. There has been an alligator in our pond at work. It apparently came up from the creek. Well, it is no longer. Dad got permission from the game warden to shoot it. Monday, May 23, 2016. Happiness: An Inferior Goal? A few weeks later, I am still pondering a statement in Mary Gordon's essay "Flannery's Kiss", which I posted earlier on my blog. Friday, April 29, 2016. Lovely song. Lovely words. Sad, though. His mother died. Wednesday, April 27, 2016. I wonder if it means anything to be Southern anymore. I would definitely say that my grandmother is Southern. My parents are Southern, but to a lesser degree. I can't really say whether I am Southern at all. I grew up here. All my family lives here. We've been in Alabama for close to 200 years, and before that, South Carolina and Virginia. Is this how the South will die? Tuesday, April 26, 2016.

Instresses: St. Vincent de Paul Parish

http://instresses.blogspot.com/2017/01/st-vincent-de-paul-parish.html

Wednesday, January 4, 2017. St Vincent de Paul Parish. Yesterday in my lunch hour I stopped by St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Tallassee, Alabama. It was built with the help of one Catholic convert member of an influential Alabama family, the Blounts, who converted after hearing then-Monsignor Fulton Sheen preaching on the radio. Sheen was present at the dedication of the church, as I wrote about on my blog sometime before. I love seeing Italian cypresses in Alabama. Much better than the Leyland cypress.

Instresses: November 2016

http://instresses.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 22, 2016. The Apogee of the Clavecin. One of the last harpsichord composers of the period was Jacques Duphly, who died the day after the storming of the Bastille. When I listen to his music, I feel I am at the apogee of an age, a form of art. It feels like a noble end, a death with dignity. Take, for instance, La Félix (played on a German harpsichord):. Or the same piece on a 1776 French harpsichord from Lyons:. Tuesday, November 15, 2016. One of Bach's most beautiful harpsichord pieces.

Instresses: January 2017

http://instresses.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 31, 2017. As I said, daffodils have begun blooming here. I saw some in the woods yesterday and went back early this morning to take photos. I joined a historic daffodil listserv and asked them what cultivars these may be, but my suspicions are 'Grand Primo' and perhaps the old-fashioned 'King Alfred'. I'll post later if the listserv says otherwise. On the listserv so far they're saying the multiflowered one is 'Grand Monarque', a 200-year-old Dutch cultivar. I'm happy with that. While we...

Wednesday, August 24, 2016. J as in Hieronymus. On a similar note, it's sort of like how in some alphabetical lists of states, Alaska comes before Alabama, and it took me 30 years and my friend Brittany to realize it was because AK comes before AL. Hmm. I though this response from the mother was interesting, and also that the little boy just quietly handed over the card. Thursday, August 18, 2016. Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Saturday, January 7, 2017. Daffodil Journal 2017: 'Wintersun' vs. 'Nir'. I got some more photos of 'Wintersun' and 'Nir' for comparison's sake. Nir' on left and 'Wintersun' on right. And some more of 'Wintersun' for beauty's sake (if you can't tell, I'm smitten with this one). January 7, 2017 at 9:33 PM. How tall is Wintersun? January 8, 2017 at 1:02 PM. I think theyre about 18-24 tall. For comparison, that wooden post in the first picture is a 4x4. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Love So Strong.

Instresses: September 2016

http://instresses.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 30, 2016. Italian composers in the 17th Century were not happy with this compromise, however, and began composing music for instruments with more than 12 notes to the octave. One instrument is the cimbalo cromatico. A harpsichord that has 31 notes per octave. Take a listen to this "uncompromising" music. I think I like music with more dissonance better. All those pure ratios, oddly, make me feel dizzy and uneasy. Tuesday, September 27, 2016. Lion's tail ( Leonotis leonurus. This is my f...

Ain't that some shit. On April 22, 2015. I had an MRI and saw the doctors/surgeons in the shitty yesterday. They were the same surgeons that had their hands in my head in the summer of 2013, and nuked (e.g radiation) my head that following spring. I don’t understand what they saw in the MRI, but the tumor is still not growing back. Good news. I asked about the long sleep sessions I’ve had lately. I don’t think I’ve told y’all about that. I’ve had a few. Rip Van Winkle,. I asked if what I am experiencing ...
