Discovering China

Sunday, April 1, 2012. Into the Labyrinth: Xi'an's Muslim Quarter. Let me take you to Xi’an’s Muslim quarter. This has been one of our favorite afternoon and evening destinations for our stay here in Xi’an. Hop on a 608, find a seat or squeeze in among the sardines and enjoy the ride. The Muslim quarter lies in the shadow of the Drum Tower and extends over a 2 square miles area of veritable labyrinths. Muslims have been here since the middle of the 8. Century, a direct result of the Silk Road. The mosque...

Discovering China: On to Shanghai

http://www.mcmainelaoshi.blogspot.com/2012/03/on-to-shanghai.html

Sunday, March 11, 2012. Our journey to China began in the Lexington airport, quaint and silent, from which we took our flight over the familiar green sprawl of Kentucky and Ohio. When we reached Detroit International airport, we were greeted by that most reverent of giants, the 747, lolling beyond the glass, garnering the strength to take us the 15 hours to Shanghai. Discovering China: A journey into the past: Shaanxi History Museum

http://www.mcmainelaoshi.blogspot.com/2012/03/journey-into-past-shaanxi-history.html

Saturday, March 17, 2012. A journey into the past: Shaanxi History Museum. Thursday morning dawned with rain, which, while it cleared away the smog, also cleared away our plans for visiting the drum tower and the Muslim quarter. Perhaps it is better, since the small bills we had stockpiled for Scottish-style trading ended up being the equivalent of dimes instead of the 1 ¥. That we had assumed. Due to the rain, Xiaolan decided to take us to the Shaanxi History Museum. Our entrance into the museum led us ...

Discovering China: 秦陵兵马俑 Qínlíng Bīngmǎyǒng Terracotta Warriors and Horses

http://www.mcmainelaoshi.blogspot.com/2012/03/qinling-bingmayong-terracotta-warriors.html

Friday, March 16, 2012. 秦陵兵马俑 Qínlíng Bīngmǎyǒng Terracotta Warriors and Horses. Meals in China excite the senses, and I doubled up for breakfast—a noodle-stuffed homemade bun plus deep-fried bread crammed full of noodles beans and lotus root. Lotus root resembles a giant pickled watercress. We would need fortitude today, because we were going to face off an army of terracotta warriors. The terracotta army, as it appeared prior to excavation. The terracotta warriors—known in Chinese as the 兵. From Pit Tw...

Discovering China: Drums at Evening

http://www.mcmainelaoshi.blogspot.com/2012/03/drums-at-evening.html

Wednesday, March 28, 2012. From the second deck of the bus, we could make out familiar sights: the Unicom tower, the Post office skyscraper, the streams of humanity. Soon we headed north into uncharted territory, excited that we could so easily slip off to another world. We descended from the bus into the rush of traffic. In front of the majestic gate, we noticed a play with hundreds of people—a tribute to the Qing dynasty? This, we learned, was the drum tower. Built in 1380, over a hundred years bef...

Wednesday, April 25, 2012. North Peak Hotel, Hua Shan &Cable Car descent. North Peak Hotel is perched on the hill behind us. After climbing all day on Saturday, we searched for lodging on the mountain top. Lonely Planet indicated there are only a few hotels and hostels and admonished that they are “basic and overpriced”. The websites we searched did not have any English reviews for North Peak hotel. This hotel is quite near the cable car terminus. As night falls, the peak becomes very quiet and peaceful.

Thursday, July 4, 2013. Mester Academy, Salamanca, Spain. Http:/ www.mester.com/. III Congreso Internacional del Espanol was last week, and the Mester group attended various presentations, including one by Dr. Blake and Gabriel. http://signsofkelly.blogspot.com/2014/01/savannah-georgia-and-tybee-island.html

Wednesday, January 1, 2014. Savannah, Georgia and Tybee Island. For winter break, Ben and I went to visit my family in Georgia. We took a day trip to Savannah, a place I'd never visited, although I had grown up less than 3 hours away. We checked Lonely Planet and Yelp to locate a place for brunch and we decided on B. Matthews. Eatery at the corner of Bay St. and Habersham. You can check out their website:. We had shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes benedict- both were delicious! Back home in Lexing...

Monday, July 15, 2013. Granada, Spain: Alhambra, Pension Austria, etc. View from the balcony of the inner court gardens. Lots of citrus trees. If you are like me, you recall the name Alhambra from the card game, "Authors" (which Shane, Kate and I played with both our Myers and Teixeira cousins :). Yes, Washington Irving really did live here in the Alhambra back in 1829 when he wrote that book. The interior décor has unbelievable detail. Ben in front of Pension Austria, Granada. Sunday, July 14, 2013. Murcia, Spain: wonderful hosts and excellent tapas @ La Tapadera. Our friends from Lexington, Alejandro and Carolina (she is a teacher at Ben's high school) and their son, Santi, are spending the summer in Murcia and they invited us to visit them. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them and Alejandro's family. They gave us a great tour of their city. When you go to Murcia, you might not be lucky enough to have Alejandro and Caro as your personal guides, but you should.

Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Chinese communities mark tomb-sweeping festival. Last Updated: April 4, 2012, 2:30 pm. Chinese communities around Asia are marking the annual Qingming Festival on 4 April - also known as Tomb-sweeping Day. It is a day when people pay tribute to their ancestors by visiting their graves, and the ritual always begins with some proper cleaning. People offer food, incense sticks and paper replicas of various daily items for the deceased to use in their afterlife. Other sources said t...

http://signsofkelly.blogspot.com/2012_06_10_archive.html

Thursday, June 14, 2012. A month before we left Xi’an, Ben learned about “Kelly’s Courtyard Hotel” which had high ratings from customers who booked through Hostelworld.com. Our two days at this hostel validated every positive comment we had read. The only reason we didn’t stay longer was because the rooms were all taken. We arrived from the train station at 9:00am and Bob, the friendly and efficient host, welcomed us to a breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, croissants and coffee. Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
