This post is part of a series of twenty-three discussing beers brewed by members of the Merri Mashers. Brewing club for their 2015 case swap celebration. This beer was brewed by Brett Lenne and the label stated it as a saison-style beer with 47% Maris Otter, 41% Golden Promise, 6% Vienna, 4% Cara-Pils and 2% Caramunich II malts. That’s quite a payload. Who does SMaSH these days, anyway? Malt flavour shot through in rays of weak toffee and croissant with hints of nutmeg, leaving a clean medium bitterness ...

Case Swap: New Brown. This post is part of a series of twenty-three discussing beers brewed by members of the Merri Mashers. Brewing club for their 2015 case swap celebration. I am not a huge sour beer drinker but I know the ones I’ve loved – for instance all Russian River and Berlinner Weisses. I struggled with this particular beer – I think it’s the vinegar, which reminds me too much of pediococcus infections I’ve had in the past when brewing. Heavy Seas Double Cannon. I drank this beer out of a deligh...

Case Swap: Düsseldorf Alt. This post is one of a series of twenty-three discussing beers brewed by members of the Merri Mashers. As part of their 2015 case swap celebration. Today’s case swap treat is a Düsseldorf Alt. The label states it had an SG of 1054 and FG of 1018. It was brewed with 60% Munich malt, 30% Vienna, 9% CaraMunich and a touch of Carafa 2 with Wyeast 1007 by Tobias Sasse. One of the best pubs I checked out in Montreal was Saint Houblon (Houblon = Hop). The bar staff were really frie...

Case Swap: Sam Smith Taddy Brown Porter Clone. This post is part of a series of twenty-three discussing beers brewed by members of the Merri Mashers. Brewing club for their 2015 case swap celebration. A medium body keeps it together with low-moderate bitterness and a very slightly dry finish. This is one of those beers you want to suck up with your nose with every single sip. Delicious. I have never tried the Taddy Brown Porter so I can’t compare it to the original unfortunately. This porter is an auburn...

Case Swap: Passport IPA. This post is part of a series of twenty-three discussing beers brewed by members of the Merri Mashers. Brewing club for their 2015 case swap celebration. Traveling brewer Chris brewed this West Coast IPA, a style he knows well from his time in British Columbia. Named the Passport the ale is billed as “a hoppy west coast IPA with an OG of 1067”. Nothing is wrong with the brewing on this beer, I sense no “faults” – but the recipe is confounding. I would drink ...This beverage was b...

An Aussie Christmas ale. Christmas in Australia is hot really hot. I generally don’t feel like a dark, roasty, spicy Christmas Ale at this time of year. What I do feel like is a nice, cold, fresh hefeweizen or a dry IPA. This year, I wanted to brew something that was suitable to the weather but would still have that Christmas feel. So what did I do? Added gingerbread cookies to my mash of course! Kettle soured raspberry berliner weisse. Brew day - Robust cherry porter. Brew day: ANHC Nelson IPA. Fast app...
