I love being outdoors with nature. I love photography. Photographing landscapes. Photographing in those times before sunrise and after sunset when the light is low, the colors are bold, and the shutter must be held open for long periods of time. Michael Henasey – Made with 500px.

The sun rises over the La Sal Mountains and the Washer Woman Arch along the rim of the Islands in the Sky, Canyonlands National Park. Away from the Crowds II. Away from the crowds of Mesa Arch. I first photographed this scene in 4:5 portrait, switched to landscape for this photo, then realized it was better suited for 3:2. Unfortunately the 3:2 is a slightly different composition. The light quickly changes and I hastily moved from one composition and position to the next. 240 mm f/3.5. Heart of the Canyon.

You see, just about every cycle computer and GPS tracking smart phone application has this concept of the "lap". Every time you hit the Lap. So why then do people insist on doing this? These are three separate rides. This is one ride, one race, with a warm-up and a cool-down. Why must you create three separate rides instead of simply hitting the Lap.

This was my first time racing the Watermelon crit, which is one of the oldest races held in New Jersey on the Rutgers Livingston Campus in Piscataway, NJ. It's called the Watermelon crit because one year the organizers ran out of money for prizes so they bought some fruit instead and handed them out. It's a hard, 56 mile race with 6000 feet of climbing. The first climb is 7 miles long and starts within the first 20 minutes of the race.
