Typing my way to … something? Site Disclaimer and Comment Policy. Daily Archives: 10 August 2015. Synopses: The New Hell. Before attending Viable Paradise, I would finish a novel, realize it was bad, and trunk it. I did that four or five times. Most of them have long since been lost to the vicissitudes of changing formats and the modern … Continue reading →. Follow Blog via Email. Typing my way to … something? Site Disclaimer and Comment Policy. On Raising My Daughter in a Sexist World. The Work Never Ends →. The Book, it is in Beta. So Two years after Viable Paradise 17, my submission novel is in beta. Unfortunately, I then got an email that sent me into a towering rage. It passed, but the adrenaline surge of the anger, along with the blood pressure spike, left me feeling pretty awful for several hours. But I’m OK again. But still feeling pretty good about this whole writing thing.

Typing my way to … something? Site Disclaimer and Comment Policy. How I Got Into Kayaking. The Book, it is in Beta →. On Raising My Daughter in a Sexist World. I worry probably more than I should about the mixed messages our society is going to send her. We try very hard to make sure she doesn’t grow up thinking she has to be some kind of chaste sex goddess, and we’re honest with her–as much as is wise with someone so young–about the world she’s going to be dealing with. Father of a third grader, high sc...

Typing my way to … something? Site Disclaimer and Comment Policy. Monthly Archives: August 2015. On Race, Microaggression, and Teaching the Wrong Lesson. Like almost all white teachers who work in “urban” (which is EdSpeak for “mostly PoC and poor”) schools, I’ve been accused of racism for things like asking a kid who was being disruptive to stop and do his work. Enjoyable but utterly derivative. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. April 16, 2015. I am relieved beyond measure to see that The Three-Body Problem. By Liu Cixin (translated by Ken Liu) has been added to the Best Novel Hugo shortlist in place of Lines of Departure . Mind you that I am not trying to debase myself by saying that Lines of Departure wasn’t worthy of a Hugo. I just think that The Three-Body Problem is equally worthy of one, and in my own opinion far more so.). As saddened as...

CD Covington's blog, about writing, life, and whatever mood takes me. It's a pun. laugh.). Right, then. I have the physical certificate for the teaching course in hand, so I am all official on this thing. Woot! I'm teaching my third class at the language school, and it seems to be going well. My sister had a baby about a month ago, so I have a niece. I crocheted a blanket for her, and it worked out well. My sister texted me a picture of the baby on the blanket. After I finish novel revisions, I'm working...

CD Covington's blog, about writing, life, and whatever mood takes me. 2014 Hugos: short stories. It's that time of year again. I'm working through the fiction, though afaik the packet isn't available yet, so I can only read what's freely available online (or from friends/the library) or already in my collection. The list of nominees is here. With links to some of the pieces. Now, my thoughts on the short fiction (in the order they appear in the list above). The Water that Falls on You From Nowhere" by Jo...

Obligated to Exaggerate: Whirlwind summer
http://obligatedtoexaggerate.blogspot.com/2015/07/whirlwind-summer.html
CD Covington's blog, about writing, life, and whatever mood takes me. I've been busy this summer. I spent 4 days in Atlanta for Shatterdome Atlanta 2 (jaeger boogaloo), was home for two days, then flew out to Seattle for my brother-in-law's wedding on Orcas Island, whence his wife hails, to be gone for five days. So we were gone nine of eleven days. The con was fun, and the wedding was in a lovely location. I bought three books at the con: Hild. So I can have it forever and also get Ben to read it.).

CD Covington's blog, about writing, life, and whatever mood takes me. I had a blast at DragonCon again this year. This time, Ben and I made armor for the first time so we could cosplay as Sasha and Aleksis Kaidanovsky from Pacific Rim. We didn't quite finish everything in time, and we discovered a few things that will need to be adjusted/fixed for future conventions, but for a first armor done in about a month (less, actually), I think we did pretty well. Musings on Things of Interest. This is the occasionally-updated web presence of author Beth Morris Tanner. I started blogging in 2001, while I was living overseas, primarily as a way to stay in touch with my friends and family back home. Originally on Diaryland, I then switched to Livejournal, and now to WordPress, although I suspect there are some feeble other offshoots in various other places – as I find them I am attempting to corral them and get them more or less in one place. It's OK, but I liked the old one better.
