Jenny's London Ontario : February 2013
http://jennifergrainger.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
A London with Victorian architecture, heritage streetscapes, a revitalized downtown, and trees. Monday, February 18, 2013. London's oldest bridge has spanned the Thames since 1875. Built by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton, Ohio, it was actually a kit, put together on site by Isaac Crouse. Now well past its intended life span, the bridge is still connecting Blackfriars and Ridout streets. The other idea is to make it a pedestrian bridge. Though weather may be the main reason for deterioratio...

A London with Victorian architecture, heritage streetscapes, a revitalized downtown, and trees. Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Ask ten random Londoners what should be changed about the core and you're likely to get ten different answers. So now that city planners have drafted a "master plan" to revamp the city's heart, there's likely to be much public debate about whether the ideas are constructive or a silly waste of money. Chip Martin of The Free Press summarized many of the suggestions here. Isn't this one...

A London with Victorian architecture, heritage streetscapes, a revitalized downtown, and trees. Wednesday, October 8, 2014. What do we want for our riverfront? The County of Middlesex has applied to redevelop the site of the Middlesex County Health Unit, possibly into a 30-storey highrise with 200 residential units and 4,500 sq. ft. of commercial space. The location at 50 King Street overlooks the Forks of the Thames and the Middlesex County building shown at right. Ridout Street was London's original no...

A London with Victorian architecture, heritage streetscapes, a revitalized downtown, and trees. Sunday, July 6, 2014. London Building Types: Ontario Cottage. A variation is the side hall plan with the front door on one side. A cute example, shown below, is 1 Dundas Street near the Forks of the Thames, now the First Hussars Museum. Whether downtown, in Old North , Old South, Old East, Soho, Blackfriars, or beyond, there are enough cottage examples in the city to fill several posts. International and y...

As the heritage explorer wanders the streets of London . . . someone might be watching. Who knows where this is? Hmmmno takers on this one. Here's a hint:. The above symbol appears on a fence surrounding the property. Can anyone guess where this is? Tuesday, July 16, 2013. The plantings could be a problem. Jenny's London Ontario : March 2015

A London with Victorian architecture, heritage streetscapes, a revitalized downtown, and trees. Thursday, March 12, 2015. War Memorial Children's Hospital. Than what was recommended. For the most part I’m pleased. Tearing down the War Memorial Children’s Hospital would have been a poor way to commemorate the 100. There are large costs involved in saving these buildings, including security, abatement (the removal of hazardous materials), and carrying costs of about $1 million a year until the buildings ar...

A London with Victorian architecture, heritage streetscapes, a revitalized downtown, and trees. Monday, March 18, 2013. The Fugitive Slave Chapel, Thames Street. An extremely important part of London history is threatened. Aboutown Transportation wants to level 275 Thames Street to make - you guessed it - a parking lot. Aboutown's Jim Donnelly says the building, which they own, is beyond saving. Eventually, London's black community founded another church on Grey Street and 275 Thames Street became a resi...
