Sunday, April 24, 2011. Semana Santa…very early Easter Sunday morning. Up at 3.10 am, dressed and off to the Plaza by 3.45 am for the first Easter Mass in the Cathedral. The Plaza was still packed from the night’s celebrations and I would suggest that some were going to be seriously unwell later in the day. Some looked as though they were that way already! Wednesday, April 20, 2011. The pre-schoolers Palm Sunday procession. They may have been four days late, nevertheless, these small children took their procession through the center of Ayacucho very seriously. They even processed with their own brass band. Jesus on the bicycle ‘donkey’ led the procession. There were also a number of Anders being carried by the children and this one was especially fine, and was also being borne very proudly. The action all began mid afternoon in the Plaza de Armas when the students from the various tertiary establishments of Ayacucho arrived with their preliminary sketches, chalk, string and bags of different coloured petal, leaves and grasses in order to convert large areas of the road into a massive floral carpet. Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Tuesday was a very quiet day for us. Although there were some evening activities on the Semana Santa program we chose to have a quiet day in order to be fully prepared for today – Wednesday. From what we have been told and what we have read this is one of the big days, and nights. Friday, April 22, 2011. Two evenings of exciting local folk dancing. On Wednesday evening we attended the local folk dancing held in the courtyard of the ‘El Monasterió’ building. Last night the performance was held in the ‘Centro Cultural’, the Cultural Center associated with the University of ‘San Cristobal de Huamanga’. Both of the evenings were something to behold, although we both agreed that last night’s performance slightly outshone the performance of Wednesday night. Luke and Marion Guthrie.
