Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. The Indian Grocer #3: Upma. Upma in a package. Is an Indian dish, often served for breakfast, made of refined wheat grains (known as. It’s essentially the Indian answer to our boring Uncle Ben’s Cream of Wheat breakfast. And if anyone is looking for a healthy, filling, warm breakfast dish to add to their bagel-cereal-oatmeal-breakfast lineup, I’d heartily recommend it. The problem, for me, is that I can’t make. Each serving as 4 grams of fat and 165 calories, alt...

The Indian Grocer #4: Frozen Lotus Root | Milwaukee Masala

https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2010/11/06/the-indian-grocer-4-frozen-lotus-root

Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. The Indian Grocer #4: Frozen Lotus Root. Mmm….Not so much. Well, this is kind of a bummer to write. Because I love lotus roots. And I normally love frozen Indian food. Products. But, nevertheless, steer clear of frozen lotus. It doesn’t retain its crispness, and, even worse, it turns a really unappetizing gray color as it thaws. Ick. In the meantime, you have three choices if you are hankerin’ for lotus:. 1 Get on a plane and fly to India. On November 8, 2010 at ...

The Indian Grocer #2: Aloo Paratha | Milwaukee Masala

https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2010/06/01/the-indian-grocer-2-aloo-paratha

Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. The Indian Grocer #2: Aloo Paratha. You have to be careful with the frozen breads. Sometimes they’re pretty good, but the bad ones are BAD. Fortunately, DEEP brand. Are pretty darn tasty. I was introduced to them by my Hindi tutor, who made a few for lunch one day and told me they were the best frozen parathas she’d tasted. And once I tried them, I was hooked. Is an amalgamation of the words. These are great for a light lunch or a snack. Each package contains fou...

Masale Bhaat | Milwaukee Masala

https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2011/05/17/masale-bhaat

Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. This dish smells like India to me. Out of all the Indian food I cook on a regular basis, the spices and coconut in this “spiced rice” dish smell the best when cooking. It reminds me of being in a house in Pune. Masale Bhaat in the pot. Masale Bhaat (spiced rice). Several curry leaves (4). 1/2 tsp. mustard seeds. 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds. 3 Tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut. 1/4 tsp. turmeric (I always add a pinch more). 1/8 tsp. black pepper. 1 tsp lemon juice.

Grandma’s Dishes | Milwaukee Masala

https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2010/08/22/grandmas-dishes

Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. My grandmother's china. I apologize for having gone missing. I’ve been extremely busy these past few weeks — we’ve moved to Washington, D.C., so I can start graduate school next week and the move was NOT an easy one. Let’s just say everything that could have gone wrong did, and leave it at that. So, not only have I not had time to blog, I haven’t really even had time to cook. Could it be possible? I’m pleasantly surprised! There are: 12 cups, 12 saucers, 12 tiny ...

Just another WordPress.com site. God’s Own Country: Kerala →. Why I Love My Local Desi Store. February 20, 2011. After trying out nearly every Desi store within a twenty minute drive from our house, we have taken to patronizing one shop exclusively. We go there for spices, a good portion of our produce, rice, frozen coconut, ready-made paratha, dosa batter, and or course, fresh curry leaves, which we seem to need a new package of every week. They welcome Jamaican and Caribbean customers and will special-...
