They worked in the lo'i, removing weeds and invasive apple snails and their eggs, and then cleansed themselves in the fresh water spring. They learned about kukui and got to make a kukui nut top and ended the day with some makahiki games. Mahalo Aunty Ku'uipo for the experience! Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Mililani Middle School Tree Huggers. Thursday, November 21, 2013. On Saturday, November 16, 2013, the Tree Huggers visited Ahua Reef on Hickam. Ahua Reef is very near the reef runway so we could see and hear airplanes landing the entire time.They got up close and personal with the invasive coastal plant pickleweed and the creatures living among it in the sand. Some students even found some scorpions and were brave enough to hold them.using gloves of course! And Naio ( Myoporum sandwicense.

Mililani Middle School Tree Huggers. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. On Saturday April 18th the Tree Huggers got a unique and exciting experience be traveling on Kuaokala road from the Wai'anae side of the mountains to the northshore, 4WD most of the way. While we did not need to do much hiking we got to collect a lot of native seed for the Wai'anae Mountains Watershed Partnership. The seeds will be processed and then planted in the greenhouse back at school until they are large enough to be out-planted.

Mililani Middle School Tree Huggers. Monday, January 27, 2014. After a long winter break from Tree Hugging, we ventured out for a hike. On Saturday January 25, 2014 the tree huggers hiked up to the picnic table on Kealia Trail. It was a nice and cool winter day. The 'anunu ( Sicyos hispidus. Was flourishing and the Wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis. Leaves were nice dark green. Mr Horstman flexed his tree muscles and lifted a really big log! Ellis and Allyson showed their tree hugger pride!

Mililani Middle School Tree Huggers. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. On Saturday, July 18, 2015 the Tree Huggers teamed up with the MMS Service Learning Club and volunteered at Goodwill Goes GLAM. The event is Goodwill's annual fundraiser to support their mission of helping people with employment barriers reach their full potential and become self-sufficient. The students helped to put price tags on the items, label the tags with sizes, and sort clothes for the retail event. Mahalo to all who shared their photos!

Mililani Middle School Tree Huggers. Friday, October 25, 2013. Makaha Valley Service Project. On October 19, 2013 the Tree Huggers went to Makaha Valley with the Wai'anae Mountains Watershed Partnership and the Board of Water Supply. The students worked really hard removing guinea grass with sickles and creating contour lines using A-frames. At the end of the trip students got to hike up the valley a bit and enjoy the view. Great job tree huggers! Next stop is Ahua Reef in November.
