Inheritance: The Tradition of Using Forms in Poetry | Thus Spoke the Poet

Thus Spoke the Poet. Inheritance: The Tradition of Using Forms in Poetry. Stanza I of The Faerie Queene:. A gentle knight was pricking on the plaine,. Ycladd in mightie armes and silver shielde,. Wherein old dints of deepe woundes did remaine,. The cruell markes of many a bloody fielde;. Yet armes till that time did he never wield:. His angry steede did chide his foaming bitt,. As much disdayning to the curbe to yield:. Full jolly knight he seemed, and faire did sitt,. Stanza I of Adonais:. Swimming from...

Thus Spoke the Poet. Humorous Verse: Laughing and Poetry as Healing. Tony Hoagland has become one of my new favorite poets in the fact that he is able to turn a deep or dark sentiment or subject into comedic relief. His simplicity of diction is refreshing in the sour and complex palate of other academic poets using fanciness or quaint wordplay. Though wordplay is good, Tony […] Read Post ›. Terry L. Thus Spoke the Poet. Patterns of Unpopular Forms – Day 2: The Rubaiyat. Many people have heard the name Robert Frost in regards to poetry. If I were to ask several people what their favorite Robert Frost poem, the response would yield two main poems, one of which is “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” (I’ll let you guess the other response). The poem itself is in […] Read Post ›. My New Official Website. NaPoWriPo – Reminder. National Poetry Month Blog. Book Review: Storm Toward Morning.

Life After Neruda: Finding the Poet Thirty Five Years Later | Thus Spoke the Poet

https://samueljfoxblog.wordpress.com/2014/06/23/life-after-neruda-finding-the-poet-thirty-five-years-later/comment-page-1

Thus Spoke the Poet. Life After Neruda: Finding the Poet Thirty Five Years Later. Pablo Neruda, possibly one of the most distinct and important poetic voices of the 20th Century, died in 1979. It is now thirty five years later and recently thirty post-humous poems were discovered hidden among Neruda’s belongings. To celebrate this discovery, I want to relate some of his poetry from his life in anticipation of the new poems. Walking Around (translated by Robert Bly). It so happens I am sick of being a man.

Patterns of Unpopular Forms: Day 1 – The Curtail Sonnet | Thus Spoke the Poet

https://samueljfoxblog.wordpress.com/2015/05/16/patterns-of-unpopular-forms-day-1-the-curtail-sonnet

Thus Spoke the Poet. Patterns of Unpopular Forms: Day 1 – The Curtail Sonnet. Having studied tradition in poetry, I’d like to share some of my favorite forms that have become unpopular or have been set aside due to free verse’s predominate influence in today’s poetics. This will be a seven to ten (I haven’t quite decided as of the number yet) part posting in which I give the form’s layout and then give famous examples of the form. Miller Williams, in his Patterns of Poetry. Whatever is fickle, freckled (...

Thus Spoke the Poet. Inheritance: The Tradition of Using Forms in Poetry. I have been studying poetry intensely for the past four years of my life. I can say, with finality, I will be studying, celebrating it, and writing it until I die. One thing I have learned as advice to younger poets is this: most people start writing free verse in our day in age, but […] Read Post ›. My New Official Website. NaPoWriPo – Reminder. Wordsworth: The First Free-Versed Poet | Thus Spoke the Poet

https://samueljfoxblog.wordpress.com/2014/09/14/wordsworth-the-first-free-versed-poet

Thus Spoke the Poet. Wordsworth: The First Free-Versed Poet. Take this excerpt for example, from “Tintern Abby” with the emotional quality in it that Wordsworth describes:. Until, the breath of this corporeal frame. And even the motion of our human blood. Almost suspended, we are laid asleep. In body, and become a living soul:. While with an eye made quiet by the power. Of harmony, and the deep power of joy,. We see into the life of things. Be but a vain belief, yet, oh! Until I knew the burning stew was...

Thus Spoke the Poet. The Nonnet – Mark Smith-Soto and the Ability to Adapt. I will start with his nonnet “Rust” found in his book Any Second Now (Mainstreet Rag Publishing):. Somewhere out of all proportion. Under the belly of a stone, or in the slimy. Innards of a pipe, or in the slow exertions. Of pylon and beam, it bides its time;. It battens on the quiddity of things. Van Gogh suprised it humming in his ear,. Sweet talker in the delicate turnings. Of the chambers, but far from the sheer. The change i...

What a Day to be Alive

Saturday, March 24, 2018. This is 39 (Month 5, Check-In 2). Umthis year is going by a lot quicker than I had anticipated! My friend Katie Grant and I went for a hike with her daughter Tessa. We checked out Kenneth Hahn Park. Katie Grant didn't seem to sweat it at all, which was all the more impressive. Regardless, we had a wonderful time and enjoyed the sights and I was glad to explore some place new in my own city:. Attend a yoga class at least 1x/month:. Please do it. It's highly entertaining and h...
