The cleric in the backround of Théophile Hamel's painting Le Typhus (1847-1848) is Montreal's Bishop Ignace Bourget, who had commissioned it after he recovered from typhus fever himself. As recounted in the "The Typhus of 1847" annal, the painting represents "the typhus seeking to enter the city but stopped at the gate by the [the Virgin Mary's] strong protection" ( Le Typhus de 1847 / The Typhus of 1847 Virtual Archive.
