February 2013 – The Chemist's Classroom
https://mrolsonchem.wordpress.com/2013/02
The Chemist's Classroom. Making Science “Fun”. I think this video is poorly advertised. Let me explain:. Fortunately, that’s not what this video is about. I think a more appropriate title would be “Making Science Accessible. 8220;, or even “Making Science Engaging”, as it focuses on how textbooks are so focused on getting the science just right and using. 8230; I could go on. In the context of learning to do mole conversions, is it helpful or hurtful to make this distinction? February 16, 2013.

The Chemist's Classroom. Chemistry “Big Ideas”. As I mentioned in my last post. I have been working through Wiggins and McTighe’s Understanding by Design. In order to gain a better understanding of using a backwards design process. Part of the process has been brainstorming “big ideas” that I think are at the core of chemistry. And I came up with 5 of them. The list below has them from the “biggest” ideas down to the “less big” ideas. Look, a diagram! 1) Nature of Science. 2) Particle Nature of Matter.

The Chemist's Classroom. Context – A Personal Challenge. A while back I read through this blog post. That has been circulating the math ‘sphere. If you have a few minutes, you should definitely check out the videos within the post showing students’ problem solving. This sums it up the main idea pretty well:. I find that this directly applies to science (especially chemistry) as well, and could become something of a personal challenge:. I know Shawn Cornally. Knows what I’m sayin’. September 19, 2013.
April 2013 – The Chemist's Classroom

The Chemist's Classroom. I have been reading a book. Review forthcoming) and it has me thinking a lot about what “scientific literacy” means, and how we as science teachers can. There are two questions in particular that I have been pondering, and I was hoping to get some feedback from some other science teachers:. 1 What does science literacy look like? Being familiar with scientific experiments; their design, drawing conclusions, interpreting data, etc. 2 What do citizen scientists do? April 5, 2013.
August 2014 – The Chemist's Classroom

The Chemist's Classroom. I have been working on the syllabus for one of my classes, and I wanted to start the year very purposefully. This is, in part, taken from Making Thinking Visible. My summer read, review forthcoming). This class will be a place where thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted as part of the daily experience of ALL students. This class will explore properties and interactions of atomic and molecular structures of matter. August 26, 2014. Leave a comment on Purpose.

A View From the Schoolhouse. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Charleston and Teaching Children. June 18, 2015. I’ve run out of ways to write about this. I don’t think I’m going write anything I haven’t said before. I’m certain that I’m not going to write anything that other people haven’t already said – and said better. Maybe that doesn’t matter. Maybe the important thing is, simply, that I write. As teachers, we have an obligation to teach our children to examine the systems of though...
