Tanboor

An ancient Persian instrument. 1500 B.C is how far back the Taboor goes to. Though originally an Iranian instrument, the Tanboor is now played in Turkey, Egypt, Syria and Greece. The fingerboard of the modern day Tanboor is larger than the ancient Tanboors. Sufis, Kurds and Kermanshahis all play the Tanboor as well as other Iranians.

The main percussion instrument in Iranian music. The tombak (the arabic word often used in Iran is Zarb) is a goblet shaped drum. The body of the tombak is usually made of walnut or mulberry wood, and the skin streched across the top is usually that of a lamb. The playing of the tombak requires both hands and can often be very complicated and is very refined. The tombak got its name from the two main strokes involved in the playing of the tombak, ' Tom' (low pitch) and ' Bak' (high pitch).

The Persian ' spiked fiddle'. The Kamancheh is a four stringed spiked fiddle. The Kamancheh is played vertically. Kaman' means is the Persian word for bow and ' Cheh' is the diminutive suffix. The bow is held by the right hand. In the early 20th Century a fourth string was added, probably under influence from the violin.

Setar is the national musical instrument of Iran. The Setar got its name from ' Seh' (three) and Tar because the instrument originally had only 3 strings. It was at the beginning of the Ghajar era that the fourth string was added by a man called Moshtagh Ali Shah. The Setar is made from wood and is rather ' pear-shaped' . It has a thinner fingerboard than the Tar and is played by the index finger.

The Middle East's most ancient instrument. The ney is a Middle Eastern reed flute. It is one of the world's most ancient instruments. It has five finger holes on the front and a thumb hole on the back. The ney has a range of 2 and a half ovtaves. Its sound is often sad and woeful.
