Up in the Air. June 3, 2014. June 3, 2014. On my last day in Auckland I ventured up the Sky Tower, a 328 metre (1,076 ft) tall tower – the tallest structure in the whole Southern Hemisphere. You can ascend to the tower’s main observation deck at 186m (610 ft), and/or head to the highest accessible point in the structure – the Skydeck which is 220m (720 ft) up in the air. The huge glass windows give 360 views of the city, and up to 51 miles into the distance. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Rambl...

Hello there – I’m Beth, and between April and June this year I’m heading to Vanuatu, an archipelago in the South Pacific. On my way there I’ll be stopping off in California; and on the way home I’ll be blitzing through Brisbane and Auckland too. This blog will tell the story of my small adventure. May 29, 2014. June 1, 2014. Having landed in Auckland close to midnight and then been asked to prove my suitcase wasn’t full of contaminated goods (incidentally, don’t worry Mr. Biohazard man – I can lift this 23kg suitcase five foot up to your inspection bench by myself, you stay right where you are) I was delighted to make it to my hotel room and settle in. And super comfy bed. The joy of room service! Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Click to email (Opens in new window). So long, Brisbane!

So long, Brisbane! May 28, 2014. Aside from my mall day and koala encounter, I spent my time in Brisbane wandering around the Southbank markets (Saturday), visiting the Creek Road Presbyterian Church. Sunday morning), and enjoying a traditional fish and chip lunch at Bart’s (in Lota) with my host. Now it’s time to head to Auckland pals. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). June 1, 2014. May 31, 2014. Our final vineyard was the Te Motu vineyard where we got to enjoy a final five wines outdoors, in view of the vines themselves. Te Motu practice a farm to kitchen table approach with their land, so as well as the grapes they grow many of the ingredients that go into the dishes on their menu, an on-trend approach for sure. May 27, 2014. May 27, 2014. During my brief library stop on Thursday, I booked myself onto the Mirimar Cruise along the Brisbane River to the Lone Pine Sanctuary, the world’s oldest wildlife sanctuary (located in the world’s cutest suburb: Fig Tree Pocket). Koalas are the sanctuary’s main focus although they also have resident fruit bats, dingos and exotic birds – several of which have particularly delightful names, such as the Gang-gang Cockatoo and the Princess Parrot. Just 16,500 kilometres from home.

June 6, 2014. Well, like all good things my small adventure has now come to the end. After two 12 hour flights – separated by a surreal 4 hour stopover in Shanghai – I flew into Heathrow and met my family at arrivals, feeling somewhat stunned that it was all over. Anything – for the most part I got to spend 8 weeks in whatever manner I chose, which isn’t an everyday opportunity. Up in the Air. June 3, 2014. June 3, 2014. May 31, 2014. November 12, 2014. I spent the first couple of days in Auckland finding my feet and exploring the city, orienting myself in the shadow of the huge Sky Tower. In no particular order I wandered along Albert Street and found a cute cafe with an unbelievable choice of cakes; browsed a local newsagent and paid a staggering amount for the latest copy of Vanity Fair and visited the Auckland Art Museum Toi o Tāmaki. The film that is, not the creepily empty building). Wine on Waiheke →. June 6, 2014.
